Two Unlikely National Liberation Collaborators: Ho Chi Minh and David Ben-Gurion
Richard Pollock Substack ^ | 16 May 2024 | Richard Pollock

Alex Winston’s riveting article in the Jerusalem Post, “A Tale of two Leaders: The Paris meetings between Ben-Gurion and Ho Chi Minh” exposes the widespread post-war thirst for freedom by the post-World War II anti-colonial movement. It also brilliantly refutes the contention that Israel was a colonial enterprise.

In fact, the Jewish peoples search for repatriation to their ancient homeland was part of a worldwide search by various national liberation movements from the European colonial powers. It was a part of the global effort by countries seeking national self-determination.

This movement was fully embraced by the American Left following World War II. So, it’s ironic that today’s progressive Leftists vilify Israel as colonialism. The David Ben-Gurion-Ho Chi Minh friendship and alliance obliterates that theory.

Ho Chi Minh was considered the father of the Vietnam’s communist-led liberation movement and later became its legendary leader. Ben-Gurion was one of the primary founders of Israel and the signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. He also served as Israel’s first Prime Minister.

According to the Post’s Winston, in 1946 Ho Chi Minh and Ben-Gurion were staying at the same Paris hotel called Le Royal Monceau near the Arc de Triomphe. He describes the hotel as “once a beehive of activity for diplomats, intellectuals, artists, (and) celebrities.”

Not a surprise. Ben-Gurion was an atheist who admired Lenin. His biographer said he thought Trotsky was smarter, but he liked that Lenin would not hesitate to take decisive action.

He was really kind of an all around prick. I suspect that is why Ike and JFK were not great big fans of Israel back then.

Ho Chi Minh was in Paris at the time of the Paris Peace Conference after WWI but couldn’t get a hearing for self-determination for the Vietnamese. Woodrow Wilson was a champion of self-determination for Europeans (except those oppressed by the victorious allies), but not for non-Europeans. France and Britain were in no mood to give up any of their colonies.

Again, it’s why I say France was responsible for all the bad things that happened during the 20th Century. The Vietnam War was one of them.

” France and Britain were in no mood to give up any of their colonies.”

But they never stop talking about slavery in America.

There's a fair amount on incoherence reflected in just these two sentences.

The English introduced slavery into their American colonies. One of Thomas Jefferson’s charges against King George III (removed from the Declaration of Independence by Congress) was his refusal to allow the abolition of the slave trade (bringing new slaves to the 13 colonies). Both Britain and France had slave colonies in the West Indies. Britain finally abolished slavery in the 1830s, France not until 1848. Slavery continued in Cuba and Brazil even after it was abolished in the US. Some Southerners went to Brazil after 1865 but they were too poor to become slaveholding plantation owners there.

You know, I’ve never put that together. But that’s a really good point. Back then they were not the economic dynamo they are today. That’s food for thought, I’m gonna have to ponder that.

Exactly so. Both Ho Chi Minh and Ben-Gurion were committed Leftists.

Nor were they after WWII.
