Man Beats Victim On New York Street While Witnesses Do Nothing
The Truth About Guns ^ | 05/15/18 | Dan Zimmerman

Posted on 05/15/2018 6:59:48 PM PDT by Simon Green

Do we really need to say it? “A man was clobbered by a stranger during a robbery on a Bronx sidewalk — as at least six passersby watched but did nothing to help, surveillance video released by police Tuesday shows.”

The surveillance footage, released by authorities Tuesday morning, shows the individual boisterously yelling at his 49-year-old victim. The video later cuts to footage of the victim being thrown to the ground from out of the camera’s view.

The attacker begins yanking the knapsack from the 49-year-old victim’s back while repeatedly hitting the man’s head, snatching his wallet, and then fleeing — all as witnesses stroll by, the video shows.

Why didn’t the victim or any of the passersby on the street do a thing to help? OK, we’ll say it. This is what happens to a disarmed populace. And we’ll get more of this as efforts to disarm gun owners and make gun ownership more difficult and expensive advance in various states.

Self reparations? Can’t see the victim clearly.

Honestly, if this happens in front of me and I don’t respond appropriately, I hope I get shot. We all need to step up.

I think a loaded gun would have been the most effective way to intervene here. If you happened to in good shape and an experienced street fighter on hard pavement, that was your big chance to jump in. The average person would not be prepared to deal with that, unless only to distract from a safe distance. The best thing to do, may be to call the police, or if some space away in your car, toot your horn to attract more attention.

People who are not feral in NYC are unarmed. By law. The ferals exist under their own laws. I used to live there. I haven’t in over 50 years. I wouldn’t.

I always carry a big can of bear spray which has about a 30 foot range. For just this type of situations. A gunshot would get you serious jail time.

"...clobbered by a stranger..."

No real upside for getting involved unless one knows completely what is happening.
Might be a turf fight between drug dealers for all a bystander knows.
For many with families, homes, careers, and assets...it is putting a lot at risk.

It’s time to round up these thugs. People commit these crimes because they can.

Just a quick knee cap to leave him rolling around on the ground when the cops arrive...

Really? The problem is people don't have guns?

Blame the guns, not the people.

"...you are allowed to shoot to protect the life of another..."

Not in the jurisdiction where the article says this happened: Bronx, NY.

Besides, if one shoots “a scruffy guy fighting a well-dressed man” without knowing the WHOLE story, one could have just found themselves shooting an undercover police officer fighting with a wealthy drug kingpin resisting arrest. Just too much risk intervening in many situations, especially urban situations.
