COMING TO OTTAWA FOR A LIMITED RUN
The story of Michelle from the little girl growing up in the southside of Chicago who always asking “Why can’t I?” who made her way through Princeton University to Harvard Law School on to a successful career as a corporate lawyer and eventually becoming First Lady.
A new musical by Canada's most prolific writer of musical theatre in the 21st century, Gord Carruth, a national ACTRA award-winning playwright/composer.
This is the first Canadian-written Black musical ever presented in Ottawa featuring a cast of Black actors.
The musical features two outstanding local performers Racquel Sutherland in the role of Michelle and Jamaal Jackson Rogers as Barack. Jamaal was also Ottawa’s English poet Laureate, 2017-19. Racquel serves as Vice-President of the Jamaican Community of Ottawa Association.
The production is raising funds to support the work of The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County.

As most of you probably know, “Yes, I Can!” was the title of a very popular autobiography about Sammy Davis Jr. I think it was published in the late 60’s. I saw that paperback version on sale at every drugstore and bookstore I entered back then. It was co written by a husband and wife team of entertainment reporters. An excellent book, one I have completed just weeks ago.
This new book about Michelle is likely to be exceedingly one sided and sugered up. Her faithful drones will devour it quickly and ask for more.
