The iconic Mirage in Las Vegas is closing after 34 years

The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, and its instantly recognizable volcano, is soon shutting down after more than three decades in business.

The 3,000-room resort will cease operations on July 17 as it undergoes a three-year renovation that wipes away any markings of the Mirage and its tropical theme.

Opened in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn, the Mirage ushered in a era of luxe resorts for the Strip and was the first resort to have a sidewalk attraction with its volcano, prompting the Bellagio and Venetian to imitate the Mirage with its dancing fountains and canals, respectively.

“We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation and world-class hospitality,” the Mirage said on its Facebook account, which has been flooded with memories in the comments.

In addition to the volcano, the Mirage was also home to other quintessential Las Vegas features like the Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show and a Cirque du Soleil show set to Beatles music.

The resort will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a soaring 700-foot-tall hotel tower in the shape of a guitar, similar to its Florida property, with the volcano being destroyed to make space for new rooms.

We once got a good deal on one of their top level luxury suites with an unforgettable view of Vegas and the volcano. Definitely worth doing again one day.

Idiocracy is a city. It’s called San Francisco.

Hard Rock Vegas? Have I dropped through another time warp into the 80’s?

Good one LoL. It was a nice "Mirage" while it lasted.

As someone who doesn't enjoy casinos and a lot of other Vegas hoopla -- I *do* enjoy the spectacle and Disneyland-esque, immersive experience of the iconic hotels...and Mirage was among the best of them, starting the trend towards that kind of experience in general. So it's a shame. So little history gets preserved in general nowadays. Nothing has enough time to become legendary and upkept for generations.

I always made it a point to see the volcano anytime I went to Vegas. Alas, the only constant in Vegas is change.

I don't know, you know what you're getting in Vegas. Is it the real world? No. But four years ago I went and hit a $16K win on video poker. I managed to leave with just over half of that so it wasn't a bad trip.

I think they are improving it by building a hard rock resort and casino in the space. Much better and people will flock to it. The one in Tampa is always packed.

So what I’m reading is that I can get a great deal on a giant volcano. The Mrs. will probably kill me when finds it in the front yard, but at least I don’t have to worry about an HOA.

This will be so much cooler than my neighbor’s water feature. Who needs water casually wandering down the side of some stupid rocks - I’ll have a freaking VOLCANO!

I think the "old" Hard Rock is now the "Virgin" Hotel, down near where all the bums hang out.

I am surprised that MGM has not torn down Circus Circus. That place was a dump twenty years ago.

Or the Flamingo. Maybe they are waiting for Donny and Marie to reach 80.
