Is Windows XP still on track for release?

Posted on 10/16/2001 7:43:02 PM PDT by operation clinton cleanup

Sorr, this is a business/vanity. Is XP still going to be released this month? I have used the beta version (build 2526)since August and am pretty happy with it.

Questions: Will XP be an update version of 98? Can I buy un update version of Win 2000 from 98? As you can see, I would rather pay 99.00 for an update rather than 400.00 for a full version. Any comments?

XP is great if you like software that phones home constantly to let Bill Gates know what you are up to.

Oh, great. Another latently, greatly flawed piece of software from the world's richest man, et al.

I will rush out to get a copy asap (NOT).

Who cares? Use Linux or OpenBSD and free yourself from bug-ridden crap forever.

I'm not crazy about the "tether" to microsoft with XP, thats why I asked about Windows 2000 update. Can you update from 98 or do you have to buy the full version?

You really should check out OSX (version 10.1) from Apple. It is really something. My Mac with OS 10.1 puts my PC to shame. I am beyond impressed with OS 10.1 - I am very much less impressed with Windows ME.

You can update from 98 to 2000. The draw back is that if for some reason you have to reinstall you'll need to put '98 on there first if you don't spend the extra and get the 'full' edition.

The Windows XP site has a countdown-to-release clock.

I had nightmares trying to install Barbies animal rescue om windows ME last Christmas! I think a lot of kids (and adults) were disenchanted and will be leary of XP.

Thanks for the info, but can I get a Windows 2000 upgrade for <=$100?

I have this XP running now, supposedly a final (but probably a slightly hacked Beta). I can't wait till this is released. Mine is great! My puter has never run better. I am going to buy the corporate version on day one.

I lost only one program, and it was a piece of crap, bootleg, TV descrambler that barely worked at all before.

I don't care what the linux guys say now, this thing is solid as a rock. I haven't had a single lockup or bluescreen since install over 2 months ago. I don't even know if the bluescreen of death is still blue since I haven't seen it yet.

Bill and MS are finally able to call this a mature product. This is what Windows should have been a couple of releases ago.

The Microsoft/Gates bashers are really in for it this time. They had a point with Win95, they were right on Win98, Win98 SE WAS a ripoff, and WinME was a non-release. The broken-record claims of "instability" and "numerous" bugs won't fly with XP though. They'll have to stick to whining about old DOS programs from the early 80s "not running properly" . I am sure that there are many programs and devices that won't work with XP. They can lament these old programs and hardware instead.

So you Bill Gates bashers are forewarned before you start all your same old retoric and cliches'. This time, you will be wrong.

Do you work for $Bill?, I am concerned about running other CD burners. XP seems to dislike other media applications!

That's what I was thinking too.
If you add a hard drive or your 'puter crashes, you have to get "permission" to reinstall it.
I admire Bill Gates, but to tell me I cannot upgrade without his say-so is not acceptable.

I agree, I have not seen a blue screen since installation of XP, except when I go to shutdown.. I get a messagebar error and have to click end-process to shut down.
