LITTLE ROCK - Former President Clinton says community initiatives to promote healthy living are critical if expanded government programs to reach uninsured Americans are to work.
Clinton cited his unsuccessful health-care reform efforts as president and said he still believes providing health care to all is a "moral imperative," but said that such an expansion would mean little if Americans don't take better care of themselves.
"Even though we have a moral imperative to cover everybody and we have an economic imperative to want America to go back to rising wages ... we can't do either one if we don't do a better job of keeping people healthy," Clinton told about 250 people gathered at his presidential library Tuesday.

Wonder how that genital herpes problem is these days....
Why is it ok for Clinton to say there is a “moral imperative” regarding healthcare, but people are accused of “imposing moral values” when discussing issues such as abortion or marriage?
Why is Al Gore allowed to say that global warming is a moral issue, but if you are in favor of preserving traditional marriage, then you are “imposing morality”?
I just want to know, when are we allowed to discuss morality in public and when aren’t we? And if we’re not supposed to impose moral values, then why can liberals get away with it when supporting liberal causes?
hope Americans understand that if Democrats can get the government to take over our health care, they can also get the government to take over every aspect of our lives. Bill Clinton’s plans revealed here make it absolutely clear. Everything from what we eat to how much we sleep will become the purview of the central government Washington, DC.
The Clintons are not just planning government-controlled health care. They are planning government control over everything that the government deems might make us sick. And, when they put “mental health” under their federal health care regime, look out!
Not only that, but under Hillarycare, you would have had 30 days after moving to notify the feds where you went because they had to make sure you they had accounted for with the proper health region. That's but one of the many ways Beezelbubba and Her Heinous proposed to control the populace through "free" healthcare.
And, as an added bonus, if you feel your care is inferior, you have no right to sue. Yup, with Socialized medicine the patient has no rights at all. Just a whopping tax to pay for it all.
I have a very good friend who lost her permanent job sometime back...she is working sporadically, but not enough to qualify for benefits including health insurance. So she pays through the nose for an individual policy that is really lame. To her and many like her, the concept of “free” health care is really appealing. What she and others like her don’t realize is that this “free” health care is not going to be free. What’s more, if you look at other countries with socialized medicine, you know that the level of care is atrocious and whatever care is available is usually severely rationed. And it costs a fortune through high taxes. Of course, when I tell her all this, she labels me one of those uncaring, unfeeling Republicans who want to keep people like her down and not give her a break. I keep telling her that I sympathize with her plight, but the concept of “free” health care, as espoused by the liberal socialist Democrats like the Clintons, is not the way to go.
I'm wearing two pairs of underwear, wearing a belt AND suspenders to boot to prevent it.
One shouldn't have to wear a belt and suspenders just to augment one's quest for freedom in America.
And just what IS free that isn't God given?
Do I dare say through "charity and compassion" or will I be arrested for my anti government thoughts.
Does bubber really think most folks on medicaid already take better of themselves? Pshaw. How many of you go to the doctor 14 times a year if you are basically well? Some come in monthly with minor aches and pains 'cause they can. Here are the facts: People expect something for nothing. Period. I don't know how FP docs can stand to go to work everyday. The new program with Publix providing free antibiotics will just spur pts to go to their docs and DEMAND their antibiotics because "they are Free!!!!!!!" And Medicare Part D drug plans? ARGHHHHHH. Too many choose the plan based on cost, not on the drugs covered. Then they change at earliest opportunity, and here we go again with step plans and prior approvals. But who gets mad? The pt that opted for the plan! The public nor lawmakers never consider that the doc or his staff have to spend time, time needed for seeing pts, dialing, going thru the menu,ON HOLD, and finally talking with an employee who might make a little over minimum wage deciding if the pt really needs the medication despite the fact that pt has been stable for YEARS on a certain medication. ER docs and specialists are not prone to do PA's so guess who gets to do it? That's right, their family doc.
Sorry for the rant. I understand that some will think that the docs brought all this upon themselves. And you are right. Just doesn't fit the situation here. The sample room turns over every 2 weeks, if we are lucky enough to get samples to give to patients. The really bad thing is that people who have no insurance and can't pay are being pushed out because of the volume. Course bubber can change all of that cause my doc will be able see one pt or 75 pts/day and get paid the same amount. That would be sweet.
I'll stop now and not tell you my feelings on precertifications, mail order pharmacies, the wheel chair stores (we guarantee it won't cost you anything), and medical supply companies. More of the same. Pts do not understand their are guidelines that must be followed or knock, knock, here come the medicare police. Oh, and drug reps, if you don't have anything new to share with the doc, don't waste his time. Some get it, some don't.
