Arizonan Will Head Homeland Security (Not Official Yet, But Guess Who?)
Yahoo News/Politico ^ | November 19, 2008 | Mike Allan

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) has been chosen to serve as secretary of the vast and troubled Department of Homeland Security for President-elect Obama, Democratic officials said. Napolitano is a border governor who will now be responsible for immigration policy and border security, which are part of Homeland Security’s myriad functions.

Napolitano brings law-and-order experience from her stint as the Grand Canyon State’s first female attorney general. One of the nation’s most prominent female elected officials, she made frequent appearances on behalf of Barack Obama during the campaign. She was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2006.

Transition insiders have long expected that she would be offered a Cabinet slot, although she had also been mentioned for other posts, including attorney general...

...The Democratic officials said Napolitano has not been officially offered the job but is likely to be named and to accept. The selection was first reported by CNN.

They’ll need to win it in 2010, but for now, the Republican SoS, Jan Brewer will be governor.

Yes, indeedie, there could be an upside. In Arizona, the Secretary of State is next in line for the governorship and the current SOS is a Republican. Don’t know much about her, though.

Medical care, tuition, housing, etc, are all gone or limited, so a lot of illegals are returning to Mexico.

That's good news, if true.

I lived in Texas 1972-2000. Glad to hear they've decide to clean up.

Oh my. She cannot control the borders in Arizona. . .How in the heck is she going to be effectual with the entire country? Very bad choice.

America's peril, but Arizona's gain!! The AZ Secretary of State, Jan Brewer, who will take the office is a Conservative Republican, and has had experience galore in budget matters. If I remember correctly, she was Treasurer at one time, or had a position along those lines. Janet has put this state billions in debt with her wacky spending ideas and vetos.

Our early AM talk host, KFYI's Bruce Jacobs, has been rejoicing for AZ (and lamenting for America) since 5 AM this morning!

“Im not looking forward to what the Coast Guard looks like in 4 years, or what they are tasked to do in the mean time.”

Patrol the coast off the Sudan and Somalia, while leaving the US waters open to first comers.

Im not looking forward to what the Coast Guard looks like in 4 years, or what they are tasked to do in the mean time.

You mean escorting boats of refugees from all over the world? Or, protecting drug smugglers instead of shooting them out of the water? Or, rescuing the millions of swimmers in the Rio Grande?

God, we are screwed.

She doesn't WANT to control the borders. There's a difference.

Not a good choice. She does not believe in border enforcement and is not qualified for the job.

First of all, it could be a lot worse. He could have named Bruce Babbitt.

I cannot completely condemn Napolitano, for several reasons. To start with, before governor, she was a federal prosecutor. Second, as governor, she followed the unofficial rule (by every other governor except Evan Mecham), of just being quiet. This was in the face of a belligerent, far right wing Republican legislature that repeatedly tried to start fights with her.

As such she appealed to “real” conservatives, who most of all prefer government to get out of the way and not be a pest. This was the secret to her reelection as much as anything. Governors who do this get elected for life.

Homeland Security shouldn’t be too bad. Again, while a federal prosecutor, she had to deal with the search for Timothy McVeigh by a legion of FBI, then a repeat, when an Amtrak train was intentionally derailed by kook or kooks still unknown.

So Obama could do a lot worse.

There is no upside here. And please recall that McCain supported her run for governor against a Republican. They think alike on illegal immigrants as you will soon see when McCain returns to the Senate.

Ayers will be the ambassador to North Korea. Wright will be the Ambassador to the Vatican and Farrakhan ambassador to ‘the Mother Ship’.
