An Ukrainian couple stole $34million from a millionaire Democratic donor which they used to buy a private jet, a gold bullion and guns, according to authorities.
Sergey Lebedenko, 53, and his wife, Galina, 48, are accused of conducting a 'colossal heist' over the seven years they served as chauffeurs for Oregon publisher and activist Win McCormack, 79.
McCormack, an heir to a banking fortune, is the publisher of the progressive magazine The New Republic, owns Oregon’s Tin House book publishing company and is a prolific donor to the Democrat party.
The couple, who were arrested on Tuesday, allegedly used their limousine service company to make unauthorized and inflated charges to the tycoon's American Express card, as reported by Oregon Live.
McCormack first hired the couple's driving service in 2006, and over time Sergey began doing daily errands for the millionaire. As the relationship grew, the couple would also house-sit for McCormack and fix things in his home.
They used the stolen cash to fund a lavish style that included a $1.5 million executive jet, a $2million home in California, a $2.3million home in Oregon, and other houses in Portland for their adult children and pastor.
Prosecutors say they found $100,000 in cash, 150 ounces of gold worth about $300,000, and 12 firearms in the couple's homes in Portland and Sunriver.
The case is the largest alleged heist against an individual in Oregon's history. In just one month in 2022, the couple charged McCormack's card 225 times for a total of $602,490, it is claimed.
Investigators have not located at least $20million of the stolen funds, they said in court.
