Top Ten Rock & Roll Bands?

Posted on 07/27/2008 3:26:41 PM PDT by Bobarian

Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?

Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.

I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:

The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

Two on that Rolling Stone list I don’t recall seeing mentioned are Nirvana and the Clash. Nirvana has to be on the list, even though when I first heard them I thought they just sounded like rehashed Replacements. But they introduced a whole wing of rock (though they didn’t invent it) and an approach to songs that you still hear all over the place. And they still rock for kids who weren’t even born at the time.

And the Clash...yeah, well, I guess so. Never seemed that special to me, but I guess they did to a lot of other people.

And I know we separated guitarists from bands a while back, but I still have to mention my personal favorite guitar hero: Jeff Beck. Check out him and SRV tearing up “Goin’ Down:”

My favorite of all time, three guys from Canada (I don’t mean Triumph), RUSH. My top 5 would look like this (today):

RUSH
Dream Theater
Tool
Led Zeppelin
Fates Warning

Saw Foghat three times in the early 1970s. No special effects or bullsh!t. Just 4 guys who would rock the place down!

I saw them twice and they were in the pocket all night both times. Nothing fancy, no laser shows, just straight forward bluesy rock n roll.

They rocked the house both times I saw them (1977 and 1979).

The Ramones. In a class by their own. Nobody else comes close for REAL rock and roll.

Exactly.

Good list for sure, I might take away a few add a few . For some reason today I’m voting for AC/DC, Roxy Music, and Pink Floyd

And you mentioned seeing The Who recently. I saw them at Riverfront Coleseium in 1975. Even young, trashed and rowdy, I knew when people were being pressed through plate glass windows at that concert it wasn’t good. They didn’t return until 1979 and I’m so glad I was married and settled down by then.

At that time my wife and I hadn't met yet--luckily, as I would've been 20 and she 13 (we didn't meet for another ten years; much more respectable). She was living in Covington, KY in 1975 and was glad she and her older brother didn't go to that event. Looking back on my last Who concert, I see that it's already been five years. Entwhistle had just died and Plant was promoting 66 To Timbuktu.

-- "and no matter how I try, the years, just roll by, like a broken down dam." John Prine. Maybe we should do a best solo list as well. Can't really be a very complete compendium without Dylan, Joni, Bonnie, Winwood, etc, etc, etc. ...
