In this "Dark Winter," I suggest a fun little exercise.
Let's collectively write a novel, ONLY using dialogue from movies.
Only rule: You must quote the dialogue correctly and source it (i.e., "Wizard of Oz," 1939).
Now, I'm NOT going to start this. I will leave it to a brave Freeper to begin. However, Brave Freeper #1, remember that whatever foundation you lay, almost everyone is going to be constrained by that. . . at least at first. That said, fire away.
What we’ve got here is failure to communicate. (Cool Hand Luke, 1967)
What we’ve got here is failure to communicate. (Cool Hand Luke, 1967)
.....what we’ve got here is a failure to communicate...
“Sir, you have no call to get snippy with me, I’m just doing my job here.”
—Fargo
No, more cowbells (sorry I couldn’t resist)
“I aim to misbehave...”
16) Klyuts explained he was neither the king nor president.
“I was misinformed, Said the watch man, now appearing sane again. (”Casablanca,” (”Casablanca,” 1942)
Freeper Sloopy
[to bounty hunter] Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy.
Hell with them fellas. Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms.
There ain't no forgettin'.
Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is.
Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle 'Dixie'?
Sometimes, trouble just follows a man.
“Fat, dumb, and stupid is no way to go though life”.
17) They had had enough. Klutus signaled the guards to take him away. “We keep you alive to serve this ship,” Klutus said as they dragged the man away. (”Ben Hur,” 1959)
Freeper Walter Skinner
18) As he was being dragged off he screamed, “Oh, a REAL gentleman probably takes the dishes out of the sink BEFORE pees in it.” (”Steel Magnoias,” 1989)
Freeper Huskrrrr
19) Klutus rolled his eyes at his wife. “Probably a Russian,” he said. “He’s insane.” She replied “Russians don’t take a dump without a plan.” Adding, “there must be something going on. Be careful.” (”Hunt for Red October,” 1990)
Freeper Polyxene
Is this because the usual ‘novel writing in November’, this past year was so bad?
Just a fun thing.
THIS IS THE STORY SO FAR:
1) “The world needs ditchdiggers, too.” (Caddyshack, 1980) by Sirius Lee
I will add, “The banker said. And, he added,
2) “A man’s got to know his limitations.” (Magnum Force, 1973), by PGalt
I will add, “Looking down at the man’s arm, he said, ‘Where did you get that watch?’
3) The man replied, “What watch?” (Casablanca, 1942), by ExGeeEye
I will add, “Before Klytus, the banker, could respond, Klytus’s beautiful wife came running up.
4) “Klytus, I’m bored. What plaything can you offer me today?”” (Flash Gordon, 1980), by 1_Rain_Drop
5) In the background, the man stared at his arm, still seeing no watch, though one was clearly there. He muttered,
““You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.” (On the Waterfront,” 1954)
6) Klytus and his wife ignored him. She said, “Let’s go to the party room.” Klytus said, “What is it?” She said
“It’s a small room in the front of an airplane, but that’s not important now.” (Airplane 1980)
7) Klytus sighed. “Who’s in the party room?” His wife answered ““You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” (Star Wars, 1977)
8) Klytus replied, “I know that. I mean, specifically who? Like, LeBron James?” His wife now was the one to sign.
“That’ll be the day!” (The Searchers, 1956)
9) “Well,” said Klytus, “Is the president there? About an hour ago, a small jet went down inside New York City. The President was on board.” (”Escape from New York,” 1981)
10) His wife answered, “The end.” (”Gone With the Wind,” 1939)
11) The man with the watch, still muttering, seemed to be listening to the conversation. He interjected “A beginning is a very delicate time.” (”Dune” 1984)
Freeper Virgil
12) They stared at him and he kept babbling: ” If we didn’t do what we loved, we wouldn’t exist.” (”Creed II,” 2018)
Freeper Stand Watch Listen
13) He had their attention now, though no one had any idea what he was talking about. ““I’m scared of everything,” he added. They looked at each other. (”Dirty Dancing,’ 1987)
Freeper Stand Watch Listen
14) Looking at them, he said, “In an insane world, the sane man appears to be insane.” (”Serial,” 1980, quoting Star Trek)
Freeper LS
15) His rambling drew them in even more: “The thing is, Bob, it’s not that I’m lazy. It’s just that I just don’t care.” (”Office Space,” 1999)
Freeper DoodleBob
16) Klytus’s wife had had enough. Signaling the guards to kill him, she said “This is a presidential favor.” (”Deep Impact,” 1998)
Freeper LS
17) As the guards grabbed him, he said ““Well, I didn’t vote for you.” (Monty Python, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,”

Freeper Polyxene

Freeper Alas Babylon!

Freeper Dubh_Ghlase
26) “I agree,” Klutus added, motioning to the presidential palace. “That boy was plain out of it. And fat, dumb, and stupid is no way to go through life.” As they walked off, they left the banker just standing there. He was befuddled at what he had just seen.
The new American royalty roar head long into the wall of destiny.

Thanks for the correction. I always thought that was a good line.
