We pay 25. or 40. per round bale @ 1200 lbs. It's all good hay, farmers keep it inside.
LOL - my thoughts exactly. Nobody around here even puts up round bales. A lot of our hay is going out of state I think, and farmers are citing fuel prices as a reason for the increase in price but I don’t think that really accounts for the large increase. If I’m understanding correctly, the cost of delivery is $25 per ton, versus $20 per ton last year. So over 3-4 years, hay has doubled in price but delivery costs have not.
I know the state has paid some not to grow this year, citing water conservation, but it sure seems like farmers are price gouging. I know it’s led to a lot of free horses, $500 horses, and horses just turned loose to fend for themselves (which is not possible in this area).
