Me too. "And razzleberry dressing!" [as sung by Tiny Tim] :-)
Alistair and my Grandfather George were first cousins. I'm not sure how I relate to Alistair. Perhaps someone with geneology expertise could explain.
It was broadcast every year when I was growing up. I think it's out on dvd, I should probably get it.
Please add me to your Real Time list
My favorite underrated movie from 1939 is “Bachelor Mother” with Ginger Rogers and David Niven.
Au contraire. The Alistair Sim B&W version has never been bested and probably never will. George C. Scott’s, however, is a close second. Kelsey Grammer’s is the worst!
Agreed. The scenes at the end, when he's a changed man, are brilliantly acted as he skips around his room in his nightshirt and later goes to his nephew's house. No other version compares.
Glad I never heard of that one. I'll be sure to avoid it. Also, skip the Bill Murray modernization called (I think) Scrooged. Just terrible.
I think I have it down but I will double check later. It had a New York release date of June 30, so I will keep an eye out for a review when I am searching that neighborhood. Alas, Netflix has never heard of it. TCM runs it once in a while though.
You are Alistair's first cousin, twice removed. Your great grandfather/mother and Alistair's father/mother were siblings, so your great, great grandparents were Alistair's grandparents.
Grandfather = first cousin
Father = 1st cousin, once removed
You = 1st cousin, twice removed.
Thank You!
Why don’t you give us your 1939 list so we don’t bury you in dupes.
1939 may have been the best year for movies ever.
I agree that Grammar's was terrible. Poorly conceptualized, and very mediocre in execution.
If you want a great "musical" version, you can't beat Albert Finney's 1970 production. Far superior to Grammar's.
Come to think of it, I enjoy Finney's version just as much as Sim's or Scott's.
The background music set the mood for that movie magnificently. Especially Barbara Allen
That being said, my favorite scene is this one from Albert Finney's Scrooge/

your grandfather and Alistar Sim would have had an aunt or uncle in common.
Good idea. I will do that. Later.
And CH, The Bishop's Wife airs on TCM tomorrow as well, at 6:00pm (ET). I saw it for the very first time just a few days ago, and you're right, it's wonderful!
I will be at Mass during that showing (4 pm PST). But that is OK because I have it on VHS. It is good for a pick-me-up any time of the year. I heard once that the orignal casting had Niven as Dudley and Cary as the bishop but it was obvious to all concerned that the reverse was better.
