Man Solves Rubik's Cube After 26 Years of Trying, Weeps in Victory

You know those guys who can solve a Rubik's cube in a matter of seconds? Well, Graham Parker is definitely not one of them.

After 26 years of trying, Parker finally managed to solve the Rubik's cube that confounded him. Now, you may be thinking that he only occasionally picked up the puzzle, slowing his progress—but the reality is that he obsessed over it day after day, night after night.

'I cannot tell you what a relief it was to finally solve it,' the 45-year-old from Portchester, Hampshire, said. 'It has driven me mad over the years – it felt like it had taken over my life. I have missed important events to stay in and solve it and I would lie awake at night thinking about it.

'I have had wrist and back problems from spending hours on it but it was all worth it. When I clicked that last bit into place and each face was a solid color, I wept.'

Seriously. His wife claimed that it was like three people were in their marriage. When she met him, he was already obsessed with the cube. And she still married him? What a saint.

Oh, and you know this is a record. A spokesman for the World Cube Association, said it was 'definitely the longest it has taken' to finish the cube. Now that is a true champion.

My brother grew adept at solving the cube so I took a solved cube, partially disassembled it and then put it back together such that it could not be solved and then asked my brother to show me his technique.

He clicked and clacked for a few minutes, looked puzzled, clicked and clacked for about 30 more seconds and then asked me what I had done to it.

Great fun!

I've only done one once. Picked one up at my son's in-laws, straightened it all out in a few minutes, and wondered what is the facination with these things?

Was not difficult for me at all.

Is this “solving” or just a random outcome?

The puzzles I always buy say “for people over the age of 5”.

Actually that is pretty sweet, where did you buy a puzzle like that?

Search on YouTube. There are a number of videos that show you how to solve it.

What a lazy bunch of posters. The point is to enjoy figuring out how to solve Rubik's Cube on your own, not to cheat by replacing the stickers, or by taking it apart, or by looking up the solution on YouTube, or by getting a book to tell you how to do it.

Sit down with the damn puzzle and work at it until you figure out how to solve it. It is not easy, but it is possible.

Here is a big hint: To be able to solve the puzzle reliably you need to build up a set of move sequences to use with different cube patterns.

Best puzzle ever.
