If Rick Perry wins the Republican primary, would you vote for him in the general? Would you stay home?
Or, would you vote for a third candidate or support a third party? Would you get behind a third party?
Remember, a third party would guarantee an 0bama second term.

Yea, right. How about we just keep our powder dry and let this thing shake out to when we know what the real field will be, like sometime in January? Or maybe you are incapable of making a decision from independent research instead of simple opinions from people you know nothing about.
I couldn’t bring myself to vote for McCain in 2008, but I’ll vote for anyone this time against Obama.
Perry—Yes, enthusiastically and I think he would win.
Palin—Yes, enthusiastically but I think she would lose.
Bachmann—Yes, without holding my nose but I think she would lose.
Cain—Yes, without holding my nose but I think he would lose.

Why would anyone just stay home? I would vote for anyone running against Obama. Period.
You claim to be a SENIOR WRITER but you run a vanity poll and axe the same question five times.

The Primary is about getting as close as possible to perfection in a candidate. The General is about defeating the enemy. I do not use that word lightly.

Agreed. In answer to the poster’s question, I’d have to see the mechanics and dynamics when it actually got to that point. There’s a lot I don’t know about Perry, we also don’t know who his running mate would be (until after the primary). I’ve seen a lot of pro’s and cons about Perry (as stated by others here on FR), but still want to do further research.
I refuse to vote for a Republican, merely because (s)he is not a Democrat. I will vote for a Republican if they share my values to the extent that I don’t find them disagreeable because of the ways in which they differ in opinion from my own views. I will vote third party or write in if the candidate turns out to be a “Socialism-lite” (Republicans, in general, in the last 50 years) candidate. If the choice is between Obama, and a less severe Obama-esque candidate, I’m sorry, but I’m not voting for either. I did that last election, for the sake of Sarah Palin. Never again. Abolish the two party system, or we will NEVER stop the downward slide.
It wouldn’t be the first time (or 2nd, or 3rd) that I’ve voted for Rick Perry because he was the least worst candidate.
Rick Perry is NOT a RINO. He is the epitome of what it means to be a Republican in 21st Century America. It’s not fair to call Gov. Perry a RINO. Neither is it fair, nor particularly accurate, to call him a consistent Conservative when you bother to look at his actual record.
I believe he would be a reliable social Conservative. We could do worse. In this election, we also need, and perhaps more so, a fiscal Conservative, a small government Conservative.
Here at FReeRepublic, we understand that being a Republican and being a Conservative aren’t necessarily the same thing.
The thing about Gov. Perry is he has a habit of using his office for ends that cannot be described, even charitably, as small government, or Conservative.
His supporters can roll their eyes and say that it’s old news, but the TTC, Gardisal, Dream Act, Opposition to the AZ Immigration Law, Hate Crimes bill, Business tax increases (in exchange for lower property taxes that did not stay lower for long), his recent tenure as a Democrat (and it’s a convenient slant of Texas to suggest that the Democrat Party was ‘the ONLY Party’ in Texas as late as 1998 - that’s not true. I’ve known since 6th grade that Conservatism was the best option for America. I didn’t need to wait to see what Hillary’s Health Care task force produced to KNOW that it was a very bad vehicle to wish well. Neither did most of you.)
Of Course I’ll vote for Gov. Perry over Obama. That doesn’t make Rick Perry a Conservative. He says everything I believe, and does so eloquently. That’s why it’s so distressing to find, time and time again, that in practice, he doesn’t believe it.
If Gov. Perry gets the nomination, and wins election, I think some of his supporters will be unpleasantly surprised to find out that Candidate Perry and Elected Perry aren’t nearly always the same person. I suppose that you can say that about any politician, but that doesn’t make it any less distressing.
We do NOT need a President who:
Floods the country with Mehhiccanns.
Ignores the Islamic threat of Sharia.
What to do? Run sombody else, that’s what.
I was amenable to much of what Santorum said until he tossed the tenth amendment out the window in that last republican debate. I hadn’t heard much about him prior (other than in other debates), but that told me virtually all I needed to know (similar to Ron Paul’s Iran rant). A lack of respect for the tenth amendment is a deal breaker for me.
What kind of moron would sit out the general election if Perry is the nominee? I’d even vote for Mitt Romney if it came down to him or Obama. As for third parties, what moron would dare split the conservative vote? The 2012 general election is important, because the nation might not even survive four more years of Obama. Just look what him and his ilk have done in such a short time! We better win this one. We MUST win this one! That includes taking the senate back with conservatives. We could elect a Reagan and still fail if we don’t also take the senate and hold the house.
Hard to believe the number of people on here that think the Republicans are the answer, no matter what. Can you say John McCain?? Why don’t we just do away with the Tea Party all together? I can’t believe the comments on this “conservative” web site. Perry is NO conservative.

Perry would create some shallow prosperity with some reforms. OTOH, Palin would change the game and put the private sector first, government second. The only question is how much each will be coopted by Wall St. Perry I suspect a lot. Palin, perhaps not. She may have learned from McCain’s mistakes.

Excellent, and well reasoned post. Thank you for taking the time to post that. I think everyone needs to understand that ANY and EVERY politician will say what they THINK it takes to get elected. Sometimes it’s what the people want, sometimes its not, and sometimes they flop back and forth. But politicians are in a position that naturally corrupts (all positions of power have the natural tendency to corrupt, it’s a rare man or woman who is not corrupted by authority).
I am reminded from the line in the song “Everyone is free (to wear sunscreen)”:
“Accept certain inalienable truths:
Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.”
