40 years later, new evidence unveiled in DB Cooper case

This Thanksgiving marks the 40th anniversary of a legendary Northwest crime.

In 1971 skyjacker DB Cooper parachuted into the night sky over Washington and vanished.

Now, FBI agents have something they don’t often get in a 40-year-old criminal case: new physical evidence.

It comes from the clip-on tie left behind on the hijacked plane from the man known as DB Cooper.

For three years a team of private scientists has been studying evidence from the Cooper case, at the invitation of the Seattle office of the FBI.

“One of the most notable particles that we’ve found, that had us the most excited, was titanium metal,” said lead scientist Tom Kaye.

He said the team identified the titanium on Cooper’s tie using an electron microscope.

I don’t get how this is supposed to solve whatever became of him?

On the face of it, he had to have died for many reasons.

He jumped from the side door of a 727. Dangerous jump with likely injury.

He jumped from over 10,000ft, in November, in the NE, into forest, at night with no cold weather gear or oxygen. This is also known as committing suicide. Superman himself couldn’t survive that.

As far as who he was, I don’t have a clue. But, if things happened as reported, whoever it was, he certainly died that night.

Cooper jumped from the rear of the plane, not the side. The "aft airstair" was lowered and that's what he jumped from. Subsequently, a device dubbed "The Cooper Vane" was implemented, which kept the aft airstairs from being lowered during flight.

He jumped from over 10,000ft, in November, in the NE, into forest, at night with no cold weather gear or oxygen. This is also known as committing suicide. Superman himself couldn’t survive that.

He knew something about aviation, thus his requirements for a lower altitude and airspeed. The oxygen, while thin, was still ample for survival. (He also jumped in the Northwest). The cold, rainy weather could've been the deciding factor in whether he lived or died. That remains to be solved. It's certainly interesting!

He actually jumped from the rear stairway of the jet. I have jumped from a plane at over 10,000 ft. without o2. I have made night jumps, but never over a forest in bad weather.
I think he died that night too.

I always thought that he asked for 4 chutes to lead authorities to believe he might make one of the crew members jump with him, thus nixing the idea of packing his chute with nothing but dirty laundry.

“He jumped from over 10,000ft”

I've jumped from 7,000ft, but never 10,000ft. However, I have been to Leadville, Colorado which is at 10,120ft and I also drove my jeep over Mosquito Pass which is 13,185ft without any issue for me or my Jeep. The Jeep was getting kinda lame on horsepower but being it was fuel injected no fuel/air adjustments were required. About the weather and temp, keep in mind that he jumped sans static-line which means he went into a free fall for X amount of seconds. So, he wasn't at high altitude for very long.

Cooper jumped from the rear of the plane, not the side.
Thank you for making that correction so quickly.
It is utterly amazing the misinformation that gets posted on FR as fact.

Kaye’s team believes he was probably employed at a titanium production or fabrication facility or a chemical plant. Chemical plants used titanium mixed with aluminum for their anti-corrosive properties. Kaye said aluminum particles were also found on Cooper’s tie.

That guy who claimed Cooper was his uncle or whomever... where did his uncle work?

The Natalie Woods remembrance must have run out its string.

I’m waiting for the next Jimmy Hoffa “breakthrough”. After that, what, judge Crater? The Lindbergh baby? Leopold and Loeb?

Link to the woman who thought her uncle was the highjacker. Wonder where he worked.

That is correct... However, I think he could have landed in a river and may have drowned. From what I understand, the money was traced and there was no evidence that he spent the money..

He is dead..

My wife & kids and I used to stroll to the top of Mt. Elgon on the Kenya-Uganda border. Elevation was over 14,000 ft. Of course we lived in a nearby town with an elevation of 6,200 ft., so we were acclimated.

Altitude was NOT one of Cooper’s problems. Bad landing was #1, cold a lesser problem.

Cooper was initially thought to have jumped near Mt St Helens. Tonight’s expected temp in Longview, west of the mountain, is forecast to be 37F with rain. Uncomfortable, but not fatal. I’ve spent the night out, wet, in those conditions. As long as he kept moving he would be OK.

Pretty area, friend had a plane there and we would fly around Mt. Massive. We lived there for years, it was a great place as long as you didn't mind winter.
