;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

mien; noun

1. (literary) a person's manner, bearing, or appearance, expressing personality or mood: a noble mien

Etymology: "facial expression," 1510s, probably a shortening of Middle English demean "bearing, demeanor" (see demeanor ) and influenced by Middle French mine "appearance, facial expression," which is of unknown origin, possibly Celtic (cf. Breton min "beak, muzzle, nose," Irish men "mouth").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Yep, to Wildwood again. It’s been since 2011. Trying a different motel. Thanks!

Have been waiting to see what Father DeCelles would say about the gay marriage ruling. He does not disappoint.

Obama, he of the arrogant mien
Most condescending fool I’ve ever seen
So proud of his high station
As he devastates the nation
Through his inherited Communist gene

I expect today and tomorrow I will have a mien of uneasiness, as I have an interview tomorrow, and was informed there’d be a “small technical assessment” (a test) of my knowledge before I spoke with the interviewer. I never did well in exams during school or college.

Late to class today because I had a terrible night. My husband had “minor” surgery on Fri. which turned out to be not so minor. He wound up in the ER and was subjected to a brutal procecure by a nurse who had no bedside manner and I don’t think knew what she was doing. The consulting doctor was not an MD and acted like he didn’t want anything to do with it. In addition, I have somehow damaged my eye and it’s all bloodshot and swollen. I am resisting going to the doctor because I have too much on my plate right now with a husband who keeps threatening to pull out all of the tubes and to sue everybody in sight.

To add insult to injury, church last night was a disaster. We dragged ourselves to the last Mass of the day and nearly walked out. (if either of us could walk) Our young assistant pastor (a year out of seminary) starts out the homily by announcing that he’d had a meeting with our pastor (who is conveniently on vacation). They wanted to present a “unified” message on the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage. The written message of the week in the bulletin was on the Pope’s “elegant” encyclical on the envirionment. Gay marriage was to be addressed orally.

The young curaate went on to say that 1/3 of the congregation will say “follow the rules with no changes”. 1/3 of the congregation will welcome the advent of gay marriage and will say, “society changes”, and 1/3 of the congregation doesn’t care either way! SO, his advice is to reach deep in our hearts when we offer the “sign of Peace” to our neighbor because we have no idea whether that person has ever been insulted, or felt excluded, by someone.

Needless to say,I was livid. If Either my husband, or I could have walked very well, we would have walked out right then.

Afterwards, my husband (who is hard of hearing) commented to Fr. Justin that he hadn’t heard clearly what he said: “What was your point?” he asked.

Fr. Justin brushed him off and said, “I’m just trying to keep people in the pews.”

I submit that his attitude (and we’ve heard NOTHING from the Bishop yet) is going to DRIVE people from the pews.

I am working up to a strong letter to both of them before I change congregations.

Don’t tell me to “rejoice because I am persecuted”. I’m just livid. Think about all of the grief the Catholic church has put parishioners through over marriage over the centuries. Now, they’re going to change it?

/off soapbox

Not to mention that your young priest didn’t feel anyone in the congregation would have firm beliefs against gay marriage - he said 1/3 would say change happens, 1/3 would be thrilled, and 1/3 wouldn’t care either way. Maybe he doesn’t understand fractions? ;^)

1/3 will say “hold fast to the rules”. But, I say, “what does it matter?” Only one third of the population of the 13 Colonies supported the American Revolution.

Besides, who has been taking these polls and how accurate are they?

Fr. Justin should be careful for what he wishes. I see church tax exemption being denied sooner, rather than later. I see many people leaving the church altogether. I see government oversight of what is taught from the pulpit.

Xsmommy’s homily from her priest is excellent. I wish we could clone him and send him to the Milwaukee Diocese.

Oh I misunderstood and took that to mean the “new” rules supporting gay marriage. Sorry -

oh you poor thing, I feel terrible that you had that insulting homily to contend with on top of the physical maladies. I do not remotely blame you for blasting the guy to kingdom come for that response to gay marriage. Seriously, were I you, I would send him a copy of Father DeCelles homily on the issue and ask him to comment on it.

True - I guess the last week has me reeling and I wasn’t surprised to think he would NOT include those who didn’t agree. lol I just needed to slow down and pay more attention to what was written

Father DeCelles speaks in terms of adherence to Christ’s words DIVIDING families etc. and your priest is basically brushing aside Christ’s words to keep people in his pews. Cowardice.

He BARELY included us.

This whole Mass was a mess. I attend this particular Mass about 1/2 the time— 6PM on Sunday. It was extra full last night. People just sat there, stunned.

The Mass was a mess too. First he commented that the substitute auxiliary priest hadn’t shown up )2nd week in a row) because the office hadn’t sent him a notice. Then, an usher came over and asked us to bring the gifts forward — neither of us can walk very well because of surgery, so we declined. The usher grabbed a teenager and did the task himself. Then, there were not enough ushers to take up the collection.

Finally, there were only 3 Eucharistic ministers when we normally have 12. Nobody asked for more to come forward from the congregation. My husband and I were sitting in the back with the handicapped folks. He walks beter than I do (I never know when my legs are going to give way) so he waled forward and brought Communion back to me. The EM finally did come to the back to serve the other folks sitting back there, although I thought she’d forgotten us.

PLUS there were THREE (count them) upcoming hetero-sexual weddings announced in the bulletin. I wonder who he thought he was addressing with his homily?

xsboy got a new pickup truck yesterday with his own $, he’s very excited. I teasingly mentioned to Paula that maybe he should get a confederate flag to go with it. She hesitated and then said something like, well that would stir up a reaction for sure. She said she never cared for the confederate flag and sees it as a racist symbol [she said her BIL has one on their property in MD and has SAID it’s to keep blacks off his property, so I suppose she comes by this view honestly], but also thinks the left has gone overboard with it. I said well, I am not southern, it’s not my heritage, I do not associate it with racism, and would not presume to speak for a southerner as to what it represents to them. HOWEVER, the people pushing this agenda are not people I trust and their motives are suspect in my book. I told her that there is a culture war underway, that everything is of a piece, you cannot pick and choose which issues you want to align yourself with, that there are two sides and no middle ground. She had not heard of Alisky’s rules for radicals and I sent her stuff on it. For someone who is the most intelligent person I personally know, she is very ill-informed on social issues and her instincts are bad. Oh she also said something about the right being as intolerant as the left, which I put the kibosh to immediately. THIS is what we are contending with in the populace at large, an educated, intelligent, Catholic woman of faith, who is a giant SQUISH on quite a bit bc #1, she has a gay son and #2, she worked in inner city Philadelphia as an ob-gyn. Those two things have profoundly influenced her.
