Ok so I dont own freerepublic only Jim does. But we support it. Can there be an official report why on one of the most important days of crossing the finish line FR was down? Can that be explained please? Maybe we need to hold a special fundraiser to have a alternative data site and professional server managers that can handle contingency issues? This is by no means a criticism of Jim. But it was like being locked out of our own celebration at the club we belong.
ahhh been a while for pit stories! Ours was cool as well to me anyway... I was a trouble maker for the most part but knew the only way to get away with it was to be fully qualified on everything(Conventional Steam Plant)... fully qualified MM in 3 years, 3/4 signed off on BT and a 1/3 EM... one day were were DIW in the Sea of Japan... our Main Circ Pump Coupling went. I was wrenching on it when the old man and his groupies showed up standing nearby watching. I set a cigarette down on the edge of the Pump and the ash fell down on the deck. just then our ensign came over and proceeded to take my cig away... I said in not so low of voice... ‘hey! what are you doing?’ he responds with “*****... the captains standing right over there and you just dropped your ashes on the deck...” lol... is said back aloud...’I don’t care where the captains standing gimmie my cig back...’ I gave a look over and the old man gimmie a wink and smile and walked away. truly a moment in time. needless to say me and that ensign never seen eye to eye after that!
When 911 happened I tried to go back in but they said I was too old!! I’ll have to wait for my next life I guess! My daughter is leaving in 2 days! shes goin in as a Nuke! lol.. wish I could be there to watch!

No it means it could be hard ware or hacks or Denial of service attacks or a software glitch or....add any of a dozen more things
You want to understand something that requires years of study and practice to find. Just know that sites do ho down for lots of reasons.
It is a great substitute. I kept up with FR on it. Plus, I get loads of conservative news. Have you ever been on it? People make it what it should be for them. I think I joined FB in 2008. I have really enjoyed the inauguration pictures and news.
Tell that to the hundred or so freepers on FR’s page. We read Jim’s updates there.
In a nutshell, is it possible for Jim to know if it was down because of hostile attack, or malfunction?

Yes. But both might be true. My guess is they worked to get FR back up and running first. The analysis takes longer and is being.done now. Sometimes there is no clear answer

What lazamataz said. And no - this is not significantly expensive given how much this site (ostensibly) takes in via donations.
I did not find the OP’s post to have a ‘tone’ at all and find all the hostile reaction to be unwarranted.
