What is so bad about a chicken dinner?

Posted on 06/05/2017 3:41:47 PM PDT by SamAdams76

People always talk bad about a chicken dinner. Be it a $50 a plate "rubber chicken" dinner at a fundraiser for some state rep, a low-budget dinner served at a wedding reception (usually at a VFW hall) buffet-style in those big metal trays heated with sterno cans or maybe a "grab-and-go" dinner for home after work.

What I mean by "grab-and-go" are usually those ubiquitous rotisserie chickens that are under those hot lights at supermarkets all across America for something like $7.99 for an entire chicken ($5.99 if you have the store discount card).

But damn, those rotisserie chickens sure are good.

Big Chicken Dinners suck.

But the worst is a Duck Dinner.

When chicken is overcooked, it gets rubbery. The rotisserie chickens are injected with a ton of stuff to keep them moist. Probably bad for your health, but I like them, too!

IMO, nothing wrong with a chicken dinner if it’s cooked properly. I think a lot of people just like to complain. Maybe politicians who are chronically late or longwinded end up with overcooked rubbery chicken. You can’t hold it forever.

Chicken came to be the symbol of cheap. It became so synonymous that they named a whole brand of tuna after chicken to create the “affordable seafood” symbol (thus tainting tuna in the process). Chicken can be great but for multiple generations it’s sullied.

Yeah, thanks for posting this photo. I’m fasting for a coloscopy and gastroscopy tomorrow...drinking that horrid prep as I write.

I just had a bunch of under-performing (but young) hens processed. Anyone know if that beer-can chicken thing works?

In my neck of the woods, there are many small towns(and I do mean small towns, population <1000), that are Catholic communities. They have these small town family restaurant/bars for the locals(farmers). They serve fried chicken and beer and other sides. It doesn’t get any better than that.

A book called “The Dorito Effect” makes the case that chicken used to taste much better before super-efficient breeds were popularized in the ‘50s. The brines used in the rotisserie chickens compensates for the lack of flavor.

Kroger and Publix delis usually have fried chicken and it’s wondrous! Just make sure you get fresh-fried right around mealtimes. If I get a craving, there’s one of them handy. If I can GRAB some, just watch me GO.

I love the rotisserie chicken at Sam’s Club, but my membership expired recently and I just can’t work up enough “want to” to re-up.

I had a dual scoping performed about 15 years ago. Just before I went under, I asked them to make sure that they didn’t mix up the equipment! :)

I’m glad nobody told me this a few years ago. We’ve been enjoying “yellow tag” Walmart rotisserie yardbird and Uncle Ben’s rices for years!!Two or three meals for 2 for under $10! d:^p

My doc recommended mixing the prep with margarita mix (minus the tequila) but I didn’t want to ruin my appreciation of good margaritas. Good luck with tomorrow.

LOL!! I woke up in the middle of a colonoscopy one time. Thankfully I went right back to sleep.
