The Revolution Will Not Be Finalized

Disney analysts are tabulating all angles on why Solo failed to hit light speed at the box office.  Was it because of "franchise fatigue" less than six months after the previous Star Warsfilm?  The movie's troubled production?  Did Alden Ehrenreich lack convincing resemblance to a young Harrison Ford?

The answer the suits in the Mouse House may refuse to acknowledge was provided by a store associate as I looked for a dog toy: "I didn't know what an ess-jay-dubya was until I heard about Lando being pansexual.  I don't want ess-jay-dubyas messing up Star Wars."

Neither did other longtime fans.  "Pansexual," stated by one of Solo's writers a week before the film's release, is not a term associated with two hours of escapism to that galaxy far, far away.  Or any sexual term, for that matter.  Little doubt that because of it, many faithful fans veered away from Solo.

Will acknowledging that mistake alter trajectory?  Probably not.  Kathleen Kennedy and others at Disney seem even more determined to turn Star Wars into something it has never been before: an ideological platform – beginning with injecting LGBT activism into the series.

“Disney seem even more determined to turn Star Wars into something it has never been before: an ideological platform...”

I’ll admit that pushing forced-in sexual identities and racial quotas was indeed unprecedented regarding the films at least, prior to Disney taking over (it was during the late EU that we got crap like that).

However, even back in 1973, Lucas created Star Wars largely as an ideological platform. Specifically, he wanted to ingrain into the populace, especially the little kids, that America was bad, and the Vietcong were noble warriors. Oh, and that Nixon was bad, having a standing state military at all, let alone using it, was bad, and that the fascists were conservatives. Not only did he himself repeatedly insist on this (which is in fact one of the rare instances where his claims actually WERE backed up by development notes that he wrote), but both Ian McDiarmid and Walter Murch vouched this as well (plus Chris Taylor in his book on Star Wars’ success story). And don’t get me started on the Prequels which were full-on GOP bashing (I’d mention Bush bashing, but that technically didn’t occur until Revenge of the Sith, while the GOP as a whole was bashed in the Prequels via the Trade Federation, which Lucas intended to be since 8 days into writing The Phantom Menace to be stand ins for Gingrich’s 1994 Republican Revolution).

I don’t know what you mean by no blacks... Darth Vader only comes in black.

He meant blacks as in people like Lando Calrissian (though to be fair, Vader’s voice actor WAS black, but he wasn’t actually credited).

“Darth Vader only comes in black.”

Vader was an Oreo. Black on the outside, white inside. Even used the voice of James Earle Jones, but he was a white guy. They made it a point in one of the early movies to have a storm trooper remove his helmet and behold: a black dude. Billy Dee Williams was a character in a subsequent movie. He has since been turned into the token LGBTQWERTY character.
