Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her Catholic faith and urgency of criminal justice reform
America Magazine ^ | June 2018 | Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Posted on 06/28/2018 10:07:09 AM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

Christ came to me emblazoned on the upper arm of my beloved cousin Marc. The blue-black ink danced between the bullet scars and stretch marks that graced my cousin’s upper body. Atop this crown-of-thorns depiction was a tattooed banner with the phrase “Only God Can Judge Me.”

Marc—like several men in my family—had been caught in the webbed threads of poverty, geography and lack of opportunity during the fever pitch of 1990s mass incarceration. Baggy-pant boys like him fit the descriptions of “super-predators” and “thugs” that dominated our national discourse at the time. Marc served his time, and has been out of the system ever since—a miraculous feat, given that over 75 percent of released state prisoners in the United States are rearrested within five years. Today he is a union worker and a happily married father of three successful children.

The still imprisoned are not so lucky. By virtually every measure, the United States incarcerates more of its people than any other nation in the world. When we look at the fuller picture of who we imprison, for how long and why, it may not be a stretch to conclude that our criminal justice system could very well benefit from a rite of penance of its own.

Discussions of reforming our criminal justice system demand us to ask philosophical and moral questions. What should be the ultimate goal of sentencing and incarceration? Is it punishment? Rehabilitation? Forgiveness? For Catholics, these questions tie directly to the heart of our faith.

You have heard it said: Visit the imprisoned. But what about their guards?

Solutions are already beginning to take shape, which include unraveling the War on Drugs, reconsidering mandatory minimum sentencing...

IMHO, “Catholics” who support abortion are hypocrites and will burn in hell for their sins.

Right - and notice how they phrase/frame the same things about Trump?

Trumps an outlier, an upstart, stole the election a bully and idiot.

Cortez is brilliant, young, beautiful and clever!

Like Obama she appears to be yet another empty headed affirmative action placement with participation awards abound.

Catholic in name only. No way a true faithful Catholic would be a fan of socialism.

Dear Ms. Ocasio-Cortez,

Your lecture is well written and displays your point of view well. I personally find fault with your understanding of Christian forgiveness.

Forgiveness does not mean lowering the bar on what constitutes criminal behavior in society. It also does not mean the absence of consequences. Finally, Christian forgiveness is a two-part dynamic - repentance on the part of the sinner, and not holding a grudge on the part of the one who forgives. Removal of a grudge does not mean overlooking the sin or its consequences.

What you propose is a rewrite of the civil justice system. While I might agree that there are laws which are unduly harsh and might best be scaled back in terms of punishment, in general, the laws in place are well-considered by the legislative bodies and judiciary, and are there for good reason.

Recidivism is a great goal for your efforts and targets the hearts of criminals. Try working on that before you advocate a reboot of our justice system, thanks.

The Lincoln Laboratory at MIT named a small asteroid after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez.

While a student at Boston University, Ocasio-Cortez was an intern in the immigration office of U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.

Just a feisty girl from the tough inner city streets.

BUT... lives with her boyfriend.

Too bad, Not a lesbian. She could'a had it all.

I more interested in why her friends write about “evil Jewish landlords” all the time.

Seems she has an issue.

She talks like Obama in saying a whole lot of nothing and nuance. Stupid people with emotions as their IQ eat this sh*t up. Obama ran on “hope and change” which means absolutely nothing but gave a blank check to help destroy the country.

“Only God Can Judge Me.”

Why does that phrase sound so irritatingly arrogant? The Almighty weighs one’s soul, but HE also gave authority to judges, who He Himself raised up, to enforce laws set down for the wellbeing of all of society. How can one flaunt earthly authority and then expect it to not weigh against one’s soul?
