In the late 70's there was a war waged by US govt. officials(experts) against the traditional American breakfast(bacon & eggs).
Turkey eggs. A quarter pound of egg.
That line of B.S. came up in 75 when I was back in college and taking biochemistry. Our professor had us assay eggs for cholesterol content and pool the results. We then calculated the range of cholesterol from one egg ingested by an average human. It came out to 0.001 mg. In the discussion, the professor asked what we thought the big stir was about and his answer was that it could be made into a cash cow. That was at the same time as products like Egg-Beaters and other substitutes came out. It was also the same time as the nitrites in bacon causes cancer scare campaign. You’d have to eat 200 lbs of bacon a day to reach any problem levels. The bs goes on today, in this year of living stupid.
“Does anybody remember in the late 70’s when eating eggs as stated by govt. officials was going to kill you.(cholesterol)”
AND butter would kill you too, so be sure to eat nothing but wholesome, healthy partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, something that really does kill people!
“What an awesome man!”
He sure was. He said hard work never killed anyone but lack of work ruined many.
He always kept gum in his vest pocket for us kids.
“I get everything but the chicory and coffee. Did he have family memories of the Civil War when people couldnt get coffee?”
He was born after the war. Pure coffee was expensive during and after the war so blends became the morning beverage.
The coffee/chicory blend was the most popular and came out of Louisiana, hence the name Luzianne. It’s still sold and popular with those who prefer a strong and slightly bitter coffee. And it is definitely better than anything Starbucks sells.
He told me about one blend that was coffee and acorns. Said it was the nastiest thing he ever tasted but they drank it when they had to.
Listening to him, my great uncle and grandfather talking about growing up in the destitute south was eye opening. The south was dirt poor until after WW2. To them the rationing during WW2 was nothing. They had been doing without their whole lives.
And the taste?
I remember when the government said marijuana will kill you.
I remember when GM pick up trucks had exploding gas tanks, but only when NBC News rigged explosive devices to them.
I haven't believed much the government says in the last 40 years or so. But, hey, make sure you wear your mask.
...and when you weren’t allowed to go outside and play because polio was coming out of the ground. 1950’s
When we cook bacon, we follow with potatoes in the pan to soak up the bacon fat.
There’s also little discussion about the fate of ingested cholesterol. Is it digested into smaller chemical components, or does it pass unaltered into the bloodstream.
This isn’t my main area of expertise, so I’m just quoting what I’ve read: Most cholesterol is produced in the body by the liver. If it weren’t, statins wouldn’t work as well as they do in suppressing blood cholesterol if you ate a lot of eggs!
I remember Winn-Dixie and A&P used to sell whole beans and you could grind them in the in-store grinder.
There was also an old mom and pop store that sold whole beans and had the grinder for customer use.
Oddly chicory is now being touted by nutritionists as a wonder plant that helps everything from diabetes to high blood pressure. Go figure.
The amount of cholesterol that enters the bloodstream from two eggs is insignificant. If you don’t take in enough cholesterol in your diet, your body tries to make up for it but the cholesterol it produces is not the good stuff.
I was eating my 2 eggs and sausage and o’brien potatoes while reading this. I am doomed!
#45 A member of our family lived to 109. Every morning he had 2 fried eggs, 6 slices of bacon, 3 biscuits and 3 cups of Luzianne Chickory and Coffee.
He also walked 4 miles a day until he was 102. He was still walking 1/4 mile every day until a week before he died.
The day he died he had his usual breakfast.
See it was all that walking that killed him! : )
I understand the purist part.
I feel the same way about the Designated Hitter Rule.
I personally like a mellower coffee like the Community brand. Every now and then though I feel nostalgic and get some Luzianne from a friend who likes her coffee blacker than midnight in a small closed closet, thick enough for the spoon to stand straight up and strong enough to dissolve the spoon if left too long.
We never ate arugula or dandelion but there were dandelion and sassafras teas.
Curiously researchers have been turning back to the old folk remedies and are finding new uses for old standbys. Dandelion is even being tested for use in cancer treatment.
I don’t know about a poet. I do know folks from up north say we southerners use twice as many words as necessary.
I say yankees bite sentences off and swallow words whole.
As to coffee my current favorite is Community brand. Another Louisiana product. Strong but smooth without bitterness.
I used to like heavy lagers and bite your tongue off liquor. IF I have an occasional beer now it’s a nice mellow one. The pilsners.
I gave up liquor completely.
I love greens but don’t like the bitter varieties anymore. Reminds me, I need to eat more greens.
