Carrington Event still provides warning of Sun’s potential 161 years later

On 28 August 1859, a series of sunspots began to form on the surface of our stellar parent[parent?]. The sunspots quickly tangled the Sun’s magnetic field lines in their area and produced bright, observed solar flares and one — likely two — Coronal Mass Ejections, one major.

The massive solar storm impacted [Earth]on 1-2 September 1859, causing widespread disruption to electrical and Telegraph services and spawning auroras visible in the tropics.

...

It also resulted in the earliest observations of solar flares — by Richard Carrington...and Richard Hodgson...

Coming just a few months before the solar maximum of 1860, numerous sunspots began to appear on the surface of the Sun on 28 August 1859 and were observed by Richard Carrington, who produced detailed drawings of them as they appeared on 1 September 1859.

The same day that the sunspots appeared, strong auroras began to dance around Earth’s magnetic lines, visible as far south as New England in North America. By 29 August, auroras were visible as far north as Queensland, Australia, in the Southern Hemisphere.

Follow-up investigations over the last century and a half point to the auroral displays of the 28 and 29 August 1859 as the clue for why the 1 September CME traveled as fast as it did. It is now widely believed and accepted that a smaller CME erupted from the Sun in late-August and effectively cleared the path between Earth and the Sun of most of the solar wind plasma that would normally slow down a CME.

...

Historical evidence in the form of Carbon-14 trapped and preserved in tree rings indicates that the previous, similarly energetic CME event to the one in 1859 occurred in 774 CE [AD]and that Carrington-class Earth impact events occur on average once every several millennia.

I hear those Carrington events were quite grand. (George Peppard was the first Blake Carrington, I'm told).

I remember reading about this years ago in a magazine, and how the relatively new telegraph communications lines were disrupted.

- this is like the virus. Won’t be news til the Corona Mass Ejection is already on its way. But good reminder though ...

Per the article, with some warning

The best we could do now is simply try to minimize the damage.

I guess the question is, how much could we minimize the damage?

Not only disrupted, some telegraph offices even burned down.
Fact.

"a Carrington-class event impacting Earth today would....cause widespread — if not global — electrical disruptions, blackouts, and damages to electrical grids.
"...Power restoration estimates range anywhere from a weak to ...more than a year to the hardest-hit regions.
"Electronic payment systems ...would likely crash,...as would ATMs..."

Almost inevitable at some point in time. Might not be in our lifetimes, but easily could.

Couple that with the possible intentional EMP attack and this type of disaster moves up on the "possible" scale considerably.

As we have learned from the Global Warming hoax, NASA is not a reliable source of information. The statement from them is speculation, not factual, even though it's written as facts. The Carrington Event mostly disrupted telegraph lines and equipment.

In that era, these were very low current (battery powered) devices with long wires connecting them. There was little use of proper grounding in the system. The long wires acted as great antennas for the electromagnetic radiation, and the low current devices couldn't handle the result. Todays electric grids with the grounding and high current capacities, can often withstand direct lightning hits, and their well distributed grounding systems simply drain off the excess charge. It's not at all clear that the dire warnings from NASA have any more credibility then their dire warnings about "Climate Change".

Note that their dire warnings about "Global Warming" have already ended as the temperature record no longer supports NASA dire 'warming' threats of the past. Virtually no one can doubt that the climate changes, so that's a safe statement (as I am typing while sitting on a glacial moraine that was covered by a mile ice of just a few short centuries ago).

How do big time CME’s cause Carbon-14 to become deposited into tree rings?

(I’m not challenging that, I just wonder how / why it occurs.)

Yeah and...

We have these things called breakers now.

Might have to reset a few of em.

Well, you get my vote for laughably ignorant post of the day. The stresses a Carrington class CME would induce in a large power grid are almost entirely dissimilar to lightning caused problems. For the most part, the lightning protection you mention would be ineffective or destroyed — it is simply not designed for the task. Some of the shutdown protections might help, but, if a major CME is coming, the best bet is to shut down and disconnect as much of the grid from other parts of the grid as possible, as long as needed. Lightning itself is (very) local and occurs in split-seconds, milliseconds, or less: It is nothing like a CME.

Lightning protection for a big CME is like clearing your driveway of any nails to prevent your tires from being overinflated.

There’s a study that was done that went into the damage. AFAIK it was not a hoax type, give me the grant money, I’ll write what you want study. It’s worthwhile looking it up and reading it. There will be damage,
