My General license expired back in 2013 so to return I would have to start testing all over again I assume. Sometimes i’m tempted, I kept one dual band mobile collecting dust and get tempted every now and then, but so far have fought it iff lol.

I spent some time on the ARRL sight, but it overwhelmed me. I dont know what I dont know yet. Same thing happens when I google for HAM radio gear. I just dont know enough to know what I want to buy. So many options and add ons. Thats why I thought I’d reach out.

I have been interested in something like this for some time but the need just hasn't been there. Looking at the political situation and what we could potentially be facing, I thought it would be a good idea to have some means of communicating with the outside world.

I found the same thing. So much info that it's overwhelming and I don't even know where to start.

Kind of like trying to clean out a closet.

Thank you for the feedback! The toughest part at this point is finding somewhere to take the exam in person. Not wanting to depend on the government (ANY government - federal, state, or local) to ensure we have effective communication.

I’m a Ham, but not active. Wouldn’t post my callsign here, since the FCC database has detailed and accurate information on me.

Thanks, looks like a nice setup. Of course you could sell me swamp land for all I know about radios at the moment (lol), but I appreciate it as a good starting point.

Am I correct to presume I could do both voice and digital with this?

The ICOM site says this works RX Frequencies: 0.030-74.800 but it didnt give units. Is this MHz and equivalent to 4 meter down to 10000 meter (is there really an antenna for 10K meter?) or did I goon this up?

I presume its not 2 meter and I would still need my VHF handheld for that.

As of this month I have been in the hobby 64 years. Had to do the code for all 3 of my exams and I still operate CW."

Good for you,with the CW.

I was trained as a CW Morse code operator when I was in Korea with the Army in the mid 50s.

Still haven't lost the ability to understand Morse code or transmit it, although I am not a Ham operator, and am rarely exposed to it now.

In Korea I used to listen to the hams on 7mhz using CW which would skip all the way from the USA to Korea. The hams callsigns then were: W1etc. thru W6etc. depending on geographical location in the USA.

We used a longwire antenna for military use, and now I notice J pole antennas seem to be the new thing in antennas for Hams. Sounds like a good improvement.

Good luck and I hope you continue to enjoy your hobby using CW. -Tom

Just got my general license, put up my antenna and have the radio set up, more or less.

Still haven’t keyed the mike yet though. Don’t know what I’m waiting for...

There is a video out there from last summer which has all pertainent ham radio programs loaded onto a raspberry pi. I have a Rpi4 coming, (complete with keyboard and monitor). Pretty cool stuff out there these days. Check out Dave Casler on youtube from this summer for the video and interview with the guy that put together the whole package to run on the little Raspberry box.
