Alec Baldwin 'Rust' Head Gun Handler Had Doubts About Experience Level: New On The Job
TMZ ^ | 10/23/2021 | Staff

The woman responsible for handling weapons on the set of Alec Baldwin's "Rust" had only recently taken on a gig as a head armorer, and shared she had real doubts about doing the job.

Hannah Reed -- daughter of Hollywood armorer Thell Reed -- appeared on the "Voices of the West" podcast last month to talk about her new experiences in the biz. Reed told the hosts she had just wrapped a western movie with Nic Cage called "The Old Way" ... and it was her first time as head armorer on a movie.

In a now-eerie confession, Reed says of the Cage job, "You know, I was really nervous about it at first, and I almost didn't take the job because I wasn't sure if I was ready ... but, doing it, like, it went really smoothly."

-snip-

In talking about her training, Reed told the podcast hosts loading blanks in prop guns was "the scariest" thing to her, because she didn't know how to do it ... but it was something her dad had helped her work through.

What were live rounds doing on the set in the first place?

None of these articles discuss the credentials or background of the head armorer at this particular movie, which is a crucial point.

Half of New Mexico must be dead at the hands of Alec Baldwin by now.

My first question was why the hell he fired a gun (prop or not) at a cinematographer. Do they not have a safety class prior to handling firearms?

Rule 1, never point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot...

From reading most of the coverage it appears some of the crew went off set to try a little target practice with the old single action Colts using live ammunition. If this is true the armorer may not have inspected the guns upon their return to the set to see if they were unloaded or if there were any obstructions in the barrels.
This is all conjecture on my part.
Nonetheless, there should have been someone on the set in charge of making sure there were no live rounds on the set and would have forbidden the off set target practice.

Choreographer killer was okay.

Could have been a scene from Blazing Saddles.

Any typical rangemaster from a large police department would have done it safely and professionally. This is Hollywood incest at work again.
This bimbo was more interested in selfies than knowing her job.
24 year old girls are not generally “experts” in that field.

Since this story comes from TMZ, you can bet that it was ā€œassistedā€ by Arecā€™s legal and PR team to shift the blame to her.

My thought too. Her short career is over anyway, and the bottom line is that Baldwin pulled the trigger with his gun pointed at two people.

And the fact that they hire people like her explains why movies suck so much and look so fake.

All the more reason for Baldwin to check his weapon before firing.
Why were live rounds even on location?

I have a dumb question: Why were there any live rounds on a movie set?

I have another "dumb question": Considering that the gun is on set presumably for filming, I have to assume that neither of those shot are actors in the scene being filmed. One is a cinematographer and the other is a director. So why would anyone fire the weapon toward those two individuals? Horseplay? If the shooter thought the gun was empty, then it seems like an extremely stupid stunt. You NEVER point a gun at someone and pull the trigger. If you thought it was loaded with blanks, why in the world would you point it at someone not in the scene, without cameras rolling, and shoot? Assuming they didn't get hurt, you've wasted a blank that will be needed for filming, typically of multiple takes. And there's every reason to believe that they could be hurt by blanks, especially if the victims are close in proximity to the shooter, as Jon Hexum proved back in 1984.

Obviously a lot of unanswered questions, but all the ones people actually are asking COULD have answers

1. Why was there live ammo on the set? Could be a mistake
2. Why was the gun handler unqualified? Maybe she was cheap compared to a real expert.
etc.

But there’s one question I haven’t seen raised anywhere: why was he firing the gun at a producer instead of another actor?

Even if the rounds were blank, why would you shoot blanks, except at another actor while you are filming a shooting scene?

I’ve never heard of anyone killed by a Star Trek phaser, because some idiot loaded it with live power packs instead of prop ones.

That's the million dollar question FRiend. Is it a stretch to think that self absorbed, haughty, Hollywood dummies like to do some recreational shooting on the side? Think of all the cool selfies and videos they can make to indulge themselves.

I have another "dumb question":

There are SO MANY questions open in this story. Can these people be that stupid? Were they on drugs?
