The used electric car timebomb - older EVs could be hard to sell because batteries aren't guaranteed

Money Mail can today reveal a timebomb looming in the second-hand market for electric vehicles (EVs).

Our investigation found that many EVs could become almost impossible to resell because of their limited battery life.

Experts said that the average EV battery guarantee lasts just eight years. After this time, the battery may lose power more quickly and so reduce mileage between charges.

Many EVs will lose up to 12 per cent of their charge capacity by six years. Some may lose even more.

Yet the cost of replacing an EV battery is astonishingly high, our research found.

In some cases, the cost of a replacement battery is as much as £40,000. For certain EVs, the cost of replacing the battery could be ten times the value of the vehicle itself on the second-hand market.

That means used EVs have a limited lifespan — which makes them a bigger and bigger risk as the years go by.

Research into EV batteries is yet to be conclusive and the second-hand EV market is new, given the first popular EVs were rolled off the production line in 2009.

Last night, one motoring expert said customers should be wary of buying a used electric car beyond its warranty (typically eight years), as after that timespan there is no easy way of measuring how much the battery will degrade before it needs replacing.

This may mean you end up needing to pay for an expensive new battery.

Motor expert Shahzad Sheikh, who runs the YouTube channel Brown Car Guy, said: ‘With a decaying battery, the range will be poor and you may find it becomes increasingly hard to resell the vehicle after eight years.

Buyers will know that they’ll only get a small amount of life out of the car so will pay...

I reckon TexasGator works for Tesla, or has stock in it. He is blind to the downsides of the EVs.

“You are basically selling that car at a huge loss.”

Leave it on the Cross Bronx. Won’t be a problem for long.

Keep buying stock in Tesla (TSLA) and Rivian (RIVN). The stock will go up (proving the market is crooked). Bookmark this.

I lease not own a Tesla as one in a stable of vehicles because I don’t have a oil well and a functional refinery in my back yard. I do have a ton of solar panels and a large wind turbine going up. Both of which can put 250+ miles in that Tesla. The damn commies cannot shut off the giant fireball in the sky barring some Dr evil level Geoengineering.

I just looked my Tesla is two years old it’s a 2022 with 45,xxxx miles it’s an uber car leased from them it has no doubt been supercharged on the regular not anymore it gets L2 at night now. It’s pack is showing a SOH that’s state of health of 97% that means in 45,XXXX mkles it has lost 3% of its original rated capacity. These are LFP cells not the NMC they are superior in every way to NMC except for energy density. LFP cells will do 20,000 cycles to 50% DOD at a 1/2C discharge rate given that a model 3 RWD has a 300 mile range 1/2C is 150mph at reasonable speeds it is 1/4C which is 30,000 cycles. A cycle is one discharge followed by a recharge. Since L2 charging is 1/8C only the discharge matters. Yes I am a chemist been through the whole undergraduate and graduate chemist track to get me Geochemistry degree.

Plotting the decline curve vs time and miles takes calculus it’s nonlinear. This model 3 should reach 200,000 miles with just over 90% SOH which means it’s 80% SOH life if plotted out is near 500,000 miles. Tesla said it expects it’s model 3 in uber or automated taxi service to see at least 500k SOH lifetimes from my viewpoint that’s accurate.

Nice plot those are NMC cells the LFP cells are superior in cycle life but less energy density. My Model 3 has LFP cells it gets 100% SOC once a week as Tesla asks if it’s just me driving it one charge a week is plenty my far trip is 35 miles one way onto Addison or 65 into the stockyards of cowtown. A neighbor college kid uses it for Uber on the weekends and I told him supercharger it if needed. We have a profit sharing contract win win for both. Still those LFP cells are holding up great even in Texas brutal summers two years on. I am not sure where it lived before but it lives in a steel building now warm and safe at night in winter and cooled somewhat in the summer with exhaust fans no.A.C.

I think one of the interesting things about EV’s and batteries is that the science is still new and there have been many different “guesses” at capacity of use.

“... the EPA-estimated range is 341 miles. In the real-life test, at 70 mph, with outside temperatures hovering from 55°F to 60°F, the new Model 3 did 327 miles to 0% battery left.

https://www.arenaev.com/new_tesla_model_3_scores_surprising_result_in_reallife_range_test-news-3090.php#:~:text=For%20this%20particular%20model%2C%20the,miles%20to%200%25%20battery%20left.&text=Trading%20My%20Model%20S%20for%20New%20Model%203!

Another source says:

“A Tesla battery goes approximately 303 to 405 miles on a full charge and is reported to last about 300,000 to 500,000 miles over its lifespan.”

https://www.energysage.com/electric-vehicles/how-long-do-tesla-car-batteries-last/

I guess I’m kind of conditioned with the costs of fossil fuels batteries which are high, but no where near those of the EV’s. Seems like the money for the EV’s has turned into a real gold mine, sorry, and the many companies going into it, even though there is competition, are scoring very well. And the majority of the income seems to start in China.
