LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and headed to Valhalla. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.

Scheffler's attorney said it would be up to Scheffler whether he plays today in the second round.

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"

According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.

I seriously doubt attaching yourself to a vehicle is standard curriculum in law enforcement training..

Take the plate number and move on, you don't jump on a car going into a golf tournament, sheesh.

Like I said earlier, I’m no longer reflexively pro-cop. And as I get older, I get more and more suspicious of them. Something is definitely wrong with the profession.

But my goodness. Who drives over a median? Either a self-important person or a drunk. And a drunk who stops for any reason might decide to floor it in the next moment.

The cop could have been calmer. But this incident is mainly on Scheffler.

I might buy that except for the big magnetic "Official PGA Tournment Vehicle" placard on the car.

If that's your idea of what passes for a security check at a high profile sporting event with a large number of people attending, I hope you never get tasked with providing security for one.

And why would some nut attach himself to a car? Especially if you’ve been instructed to do what you are doing? How do those boots taste?

They were instructed by the PGA that they could bypass it to get to the course. Overzealous cop will cost the city a fortune.

“give me a thimbleful of power and I’ll abuse it before the sun goes down”

And it’s been on steroids since covid.

There was a tech at the Quest I go to for blood work that took it upon himself to basically harass patients if their covid mask wasn’t covering their nose.....what a jackass.

So your assessment is more than likely correct......contrary to some uninformed opinions on this thread.

Interesting info there. Especially the company tasked with providing security.

Buts that’s another thread, isn’t it...

When there is a vehicle-related fatality…the road is usually closed for investigation.

Being talented at hitting a little white ball around apparently does not confer good judgment.

Neither does wearing a piece of tin on your chest these days.

Scheffler was arrested by Kentucky’s Louisville Metro Police Department on Friday morning after attempting to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

Scheffler was reportedly instructed by other officers to drive around the traffic in his official, marked vehicle in order to get to the golf club. This one didn’t get the memo and went way afield with their handling of it. I dare say it’s not going to shake out the way you expect.

Scottie Scheffler:

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today,” Scheffler said in a statement. “Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

Yep, cop didn't get the memo so he risked his life by diving on the car to save humanity from a car getting into a golf tournament without his authorization.

Like everyone else, cops make mistakes. Within limits, their authority and directions on the street have to be deferred to for the sake of public order and safety.

I have heard so many in here that you stop when a cop says stop. At least be consistent. If it was a black guy, you’d be saying he deserved it.

Yep there are knee jerk reactions being posted here.

There may well be more to the story, and we just have to wait for more facts to come out.
