Terrified Chicago mom rings 911 during home invasion - only for dispatcher 'to tell her to phone politician instead and ask for more police funding'

A mother, who was the victim of a home invasion, is outraged after a 911 dispatcher told her she should call a local lawmaker to request more police funding.

Michelle, who has chosen to remain anonymous, called 911 six times after two men broke into her Chicago home. When they picked up, they told her if she wanted help from the police, she should call her alderman and demand more funding for the Chicago police department.

'A gentleman got on and said sorry to say we have no units to send you…then there was an awkward pause,' she told NBC Chicago. 'He also recommended I call my alderman and I said why- and he said encourage him to hire more police.'

She continued: 'The dispatcher also asked me if I would consider defending myself … if I had a weapon or considered getting one.'

The victim said two men entered her house around 12:30 pm when she unlocked her door to let her dog out.

'I saw two men wearing masks standing inside my house,' 'I screamed – 'I am calling the police' and they bolted.'

Michelle and her neighbor chased the men away from their houses, and then once she was safe, she called 911.

'They told me dispatch was on the way and wait outside,' she said.

When officers finally arrived at her house, they showed deep remorse, profusely apologizing for not getting there sooner.

'The officers who did show up cared and were apologetic it took so long to get them there,' she said.

Chicago Police blamed the delay on the priority list for 911 dispatch calls, they told NBC Chicago. The department said if a person's life is not in immediate danger, it may fall low on the priority list.

Happened to me yesterday.

My cellphone had broken under warranty, so I went to the AT&T store in my town.

“We don’t fix phones at this AT&T store. Give me your phone number and ZIP code, and I’ll text a list of AT&T repair centers.”

Why didn’t she simply say, “Go to the AT&T repair facility across the street”?

:-/

Right away it’s the dispatcher. Why not wait until you find out the actual facts?

Because they don’t need to have a political discussion with the crime victim during the moment of their crisis.
They can have that discussion with them the next day, assuming they survive.

When seconds count:
They’ll seek funding for more police in the next legislative session.

Suggest 1911 vs 911.

You wrote out literally every single call I make to a business today. It’s only missing the part when I’m disconnected.

This is nothing new. It's been the policy in high-crime cities for a long time, like the one where I lived 30 years ago.

If you live in a low-crime area, police rush out for everything.

If you live in a high-crime area, the police are too busy trying to handle the crimes in progress.

Once the criminal leaves the scene, you have to wait for the police to show up... if they show up at all.

Gullible idiot? Yea ok. If you can’t face the fact that there are many cops that shouldn’t be cops we can start the conversation. Also how many cops will take action on the citizens if only to protect their pensions and salary we can start a conversation.
I have many cop friends and several got out because safety reasons, one of whom because he was against his departments militarization. His words “ it used to be “keep the peace, now it’s more like create the chaos.” I’m fully in support of cops and am thankful that two of my cop friends have ascended to higher positions that keep them primarily off the streets now. The others have retired.

"So if here are no police to send to the scene to they send the undertaker?"

And if the morgue is too busy, bag him up and he'll go out with the Monday trash pickup.

They really do need to have that discussion, because that’s why they can’t send anybody out right at the moment.
