Cutting-edge cancer treatments are essentially useless for patients barely clinging to life, a new study shows.
Chemotherapies, immunotherapies, targeted therapies and hormone therapies do not improve survival rates in patients with very advanced tumors near the end of life, according to findings published Thursday in the journal JAMA Oncology.
"Since we don't see an improved survival benefit, oncologists should revisit their goals of care conversations with patients, and this information in the study should be explained to patients," said lead researcher Maureen Canavan, an associate research scientist with Yale Cancer Center.
For the study, researchers analyzed records on more than 78,000 adult cancer patients treated at 280 U.S. cancer clinics between 2015 and 2019.
The team specifically looked at patients in the final stages of six common cancers -- breast, colon, lung, pancreas, kidney and bladder.
"We wanted to find out if oncologic treatment of very advanced tumors is associated with improved survival or if there are times when it's futile to continue care and instead oncologists should shift focus to palliative and supportive care," Canavan said in a Yale news release.
The results showed no statistically significant survival benefit for patients treated with systemic therapies, compared to those who didn't receive such treatments, researchers said.
Further, this was found across all the cancer types studied.
This information builds on a 2022 study, also published in the journal JAMA Oncology, which found there has been a gradual decline in chemotherapy use at the end of a patient's life.
But at the same time, there's been a corresponding uptick in the use of newer immunotherapy treatments, that earlier study reported.
That means that the use of systemic therapies overall has held steady, with about 17% of near-death patients receiving what now appears to be useless treatment, researchers said.
Doctors could best help patients by better judging when additional therapy will be futile and communicate that through a discussion of goals of care near the end of life, researchers concluded.
"We hope this information can help inform oncologists when they are deciding whether or not to continue treatment or transition patients who have metastatic disease to supportive care," Canavan said.

I’m neither disputing nor endorsing the stats here, but if oncologists start adopting a general view of “you’ve got advanced tumors so don’t even bother trying anything” then there will *never* be any progress against advanced tumors. Any sort of progress against any sort of cancers at any stage has been the result of trial and error. If you stop trying, well, then game over. Maybe that’s their goal, though.

That’s why a lot of Canadians come to the US for diagnostic imaging. If they wait on their single-payer system they’ll run out of time.
I don’t know how it is in the rest of Canada but I have 3 friends in Quebec and all of them have had timely extensive cancer treatment.
JAMA is totally woke, and IMHO, would like people to choose euthanasia to remove the burden of care for cancer victims, especially older ones. Just so happens that that falls right in line with globalist agenda.

Truth is... All cancer treatments are designed to just kick the can down the road as long as possible. Means more office visits, testing, treatments, pharma, insurance profits, Etc.
My wife is going through it right now. I am nailing them left and right with these tactics designed to prolong for profit rather than actually do any timely permanent substantial good.
Every time we have a chance to get jump on it, they purposely throw it right back to the beginning. Even if it means purposely rescheduling treatments so that the continuity and effectiveness is disrupted.
The system is no longer designed to actually cure folks, it is all about little tricks that extend it to profit from it as much as possible until you are gone and they can’t anymore.
If anyone is delusioned into thinking they actually care about you, better just throw that thought away. They all part of a euthanasia cult and all they care about is manipulating it to extend your death as long as possible to make as much as they can before you go.
But the end goal is that you do indeed go... There is no profit is actually curing people... So killing you slowly kills two birds with one stone. Population control and profit doing it. No one else see this reality?

Sure the treatments have a use. They make the doctors richer. Went through this crap with my dad. Maybe he lived slightly longer but went through Hell and about a million bucks worth of treatments.
