the movie ending didn't make any sense!

I'd argue against that, but I can't trust my memory.

And in the movie a third of the Company lets him go off by himself...

If they went after Frodo and Sam, who was going to save Merry and Pippin? If I recall correctly (blush) Aragorn makes that point in the book... did he make that point in the movie?

It's just that Aragorn takes Gandalf's role in the Company and even though he didn't know which road Gandalf planned to take, Aragorn intended to go with Frodo all the way. In the movie, Aragorn gives in too easily...not much argument and a "I would have gone all the way to Mordor" statement.

And Merry and Pippin (in the movie)...who in Rivendell so insisted on going with Frodo ...tell Frodo to run when they could all have stayed under cover and avoided the Orcs. Okay Pippin is clueless sometimes :) but he should have been afraid enough of the Orcs to keep hidden!

I like the way the scene was handled in the book better. In the book, there is always this "tension" [I'm too lazy to consult a thesarus for a better word] between Frodo not wanting to put his friends in danger and his friends not wanting to let Frodo go it alone. So you're always wondering if it's Frodo or his friends who will win that contest. For Aragorn, Merry, and Pippin to just let him go ruins the whole thing! :)
