Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

S is for Sun
Credit: SOHO - EIT Consortium, ESA, NASA

Explanation: Taken yesterday from the SOHO spacecraft, this false-color image shows the active Sun near the March Equinox, the beginning of Fall in the south and Spring in the northern hemisphere. Recorded in a band of extreme ultraviolet light emitted by highly ionized iron atoms, the Sun's upper atmosphere or solar corona shines with an array of active regions and plasma loops suspended in magnetic fields. The bright coronal structures and loops seen here have temperatures of about 1.5 million kelvins. By chance, the Sun's earth-facing side also seems to be marked with a twisting complex of dark filament channels shaped like a giant "S". Filaments represent relatively (!) cool material in the corona which show up as prominences when seen at the Sun's edge. For planet Earth, recent solar activity has made auroral displays likely around this year's March Equinox.

Isn't our star beautiful? This image is taken in the hard UV light of eleven times ionized iron.

Yeah, put me on the ping list. When they say relatively cool, they mean what, 1.2 or 1.3 million K, as compared to 1.5 MK?

OK, you're on the list. :>)

Most of the material in prominences/filaments is 5000-8000 K. That's practically ice-cold compared to the hot, thin coronal gases.

A Ray of light
Gently touches my face
I look up
at a vast expanse of cosmic fires
a feeling of hope pulsates
through my soul
I feel now, I am whole
with you near.

Yes, it is beautiful!

Please add me to your ping list.

My college-age son is coming home for spring break tomorrow; he's an astronomy buff and will enjoy these.:)
