The Evolution of Wit

Many of us were stricken with a sense of loss upon hearing of the death of Common Sense, but no grief could be greater than that suffered by his family. The family was recently contacted to see how their lives had changed since that time. The following is the story of the two half brothers, so affected by the loss of their close family member, their perseverance and their determination to live their lives despite their loss.

After suitably mourning his half brother, Dim Wit decided that he was going to try and emulate Common Sense. He first began educating himself as much as he could so that he could make the same wise decisions that C. S. had made during his life. He learned a lot of things at "Old School" and graduated with honors. However, he knew he needed more knowledge than that which he currently possessed.
He applied to and was accepted into "The School of Hard Knocks" and, after years of long study, he graduated with a greater understanding of life. Folks noticed the changes that had come over him over time and they began to call him "Sure Wit" which, needless to say, pleased he and his family greatly. He was no longer the buffoon of yore and was instead a man of learning and possessed a good intellect. He is currently writing a book of philosophy with a reported advance worth several million dollars.

Meanwhile, his younger brother Half Wit, who also desired to emulate his late half brother's well and wisely led life, decided to apply himself to business practices and soon created a successful company. He procured a patent for a medicant which he adroitly, prudently and astutely named. The red colored pills instantly caused greater intelligence in the partaker. The only major side effects that have been noted are an increased sense of smell, which has been determined to be beneficial and not detrimental, and an increased propensity to quip at inopportune times. This second side effect does, however, seem to be negated by the humor it creates. The whole medical community admitted that laughter was good for the soul and the pills were safe to take.
Believing strongly in his new pills, he was a strong proponent and user of his own product. He produced and orchestrated a well laid out advertisement campaign and he was an overnight success. Many in the business industry simply started calling him by the product's name of "Quick Wit". Sales have continued to increase over time and word of mouth of the effectiveness has future sales projections on the incline. He is currently undertaking study and testing of a companion pill and the preliminary name for the new product is "Witty Repartee".

The story of their half niece, Responsibility, and her brother, Reason, will be covered in another article.
