Republican Strategy: Retreat From Victory

We may witness the final unraveling of the social contract in America

Having won the White House, the House and the Senate, the victorious Republicans have handed the Democrats the budget process. In doing so they have surrendered everything they were supposedly fighting for: no wall, no end to Obamacare, no end to sanctuary cities, and no end to funding for Planned Parenthood. The Democrat leaders are celebrating their victory after losing election after election. Those of us who voted Republican, who voted to get our country back, are mourning a loss after winning election after election. This does not bode well for the Republican Party, the democratic process, or the social contract in America.

A few weeks ago, I asked the question: are Democrats smarter than Republicans. Just asking the question enraged many of the “Read the headline and ignore the article” crowd. If they had read the article they would have learned that my answer to that question was no, they aren’t smarter just dedicated to a larger purpose than feathering their own nests or maintaining power.

Dems are much better at maintaining caucus unity and message discipline.

GOP is pathetically inept at this.

Remember that most of the GOP is still owned by the Cheap Labor Express.
They do not want a wall or enforcement of the laws disrupting the flow of their compliant workforce from south of the border.

I confess that my mood has been swinging a bit, lately. I’m currently thinking (once again) that President Trump actually knows what he’s doing.

I note that George Washington lost a lot of battles in the American Revolution. He won very few battles. But the battles didn’t matter. Washington knew how to win the war. I think Trump also knows how to win the war. I think the Democrats are losing, but the media is trying to hide this fact.

The Republicans replaced the Whigs because the Whigs would not take a stand on the key issues of teh day. Well, they did such a good job of replacing the Whigs that they have become the Whigs.

Their only principle is to have no principles.
Their only strategy is preemptive surrender.
Their only plan for victory is to pee off their base as much as they can.

The Republican Party is no vehicle for conservatism.

Republicans have a virtually infinite ability to learn the wrong lesson from any situation.

The worst part is that they’re so afraid of a shutdown after what followed the last one.

Remember? In 2013, Senator Cruz, in a display of principle, did a filibuster that resulted in a temporary (partial) government shutdown. Everybody said that this was a disaster — the Republicans would lose the House and their shot at winning the Senate was GONE. Absolutely, 100 percent certain.

So what happened? They GAINED seats in the House and won control of the Senate. Did anyone thank Ted Cruz, or even apologize to him? No, they continued to attack him — for enabling them to WIN!!!

Now, faced with the possibility of that happening again, they rolled out the standard GOP strategy of preemptive surrender. After all, we can’t afford what happened to us after the 2013 shutdown, can we?

And the funny part is that they don’t even seem to have noticed that the shutdown led to their victory. They’re still convinced that it will do political harm.

Which means that they’re either stupid or venal. Or both.

But, but we’ve been told that THEY are the principled Conservatives and President Trump is no Conservative. THEY rule and we obey.

Ryan, a big FU. McConnell, the same. The judge that ruled against the immigration ban handed us a huge weapon. He ruled that a candidate’s words can be used against him/her.

USE THE HAMMER!

I’m not sure republicans in congress have the same definition of victory as most of us. At the very least they want more power for political elites and we want less. That conflict is in almost everything they do.

They (or their donors) agree with the D definition of victory.

They run as an R for the best chance to win the next election (their definition of victory) in their district.

They’ve been promising our definition of victory to us for the last 8 years to get elected, knowing they wouldn’t be forced to make it happen with Obama then Hillary in the WH.

Then Trump won and they don’t know what to do. Their policy goals are closer to what the Ds, donors, and they themselves want. But their goal of getting re-elected depends on voters getting some victories. Their life would have been so much easier if Hillary had won and they could keep saying they want one thing while letting the opposite happen and blaming Obama/Hillary.

With an all too brief hiatus under Newt Gingrich, Republicans have for 8 decades settled into the certain knowledge that the Democrats are America's natural ruling class and Republicans exist to occasionally correct some Democrat mistakes and to raise money for Democrat programs. When Republicans attain majorities in the legislature they are sometimes at a loss how to proceed and, unless there is a Newt Gingrich at the Congressional helm, they fumble and stumble and look to the Democrats for the light.

That is the charitable view of the Republican Party. The less charitable and probably more accurate is that they have been slowly but surely absorbed into the Democrat Party itself.

Nothing can be done because we don't have a majority in either House.
Nothing can be done because we only have the House so nothing will get past the Senate.
Nothing can be done because while we have both Houses, the President will veto anything we do.
Nothing can be done because Democrats still exist and they don't want us to do anything.

Ineptitude is not the problem. They are bought and there is no will for anything unapproved by the CofC or the Democrats to prevail.

Republicans are totally uncomfortable as a majority. It is simply not natural and disaster will strike them at any moment if they buck the natural ruling class.

It is on purpose.

The unpiarty republican leadership has never been for doing any of this. They use all this stuff to energize the voter base in their favor. They actually are not unhappy with how things are going. Keeps them in power.

You actually cure cancer, you are going to lose lifelong paying customers.
