When I was a sub, we were told to clear the room if a student was violent. We were told to never touch a student. The consequence for hugging a child or holding a childs hand or helping a five year old button his/her pants is firing.
My grandson had a violent child in his class. The child threw his desk, broke the teachers desk, and continued throwing things. Two administrators intervened. That child was moved to a lower grade. Thats it. The room was not cleared.
I had a 3rd grade teacher who gave me the odd hug and even a air-type kiss of encouragement or appreciation.
She remains a valuable friend, inspiration and mentor to this day.

I’m not saying this is right, but the law, not the school, requires that every kid who lives in the district, no matter what is wrong with him or her gets to have an education “in the least restrictive” conditions possible. Kids with IEPs get first priority on a district’s resources. If an IEP kid disrupts other kids’ educations, that’s just too bad, it is what the law requires.
Wow! Sounds exactly like several kindergarten classrooms at my school.
