I am a big goal-setter. Every January 1st, my wife and I have a goal-setting date. Weve done it for years and years, and we go to the same restaurant every year.
We sit down, and I have this notebook. We go through last years goals, this years goals, and where we want to be.
And then we do it with the company, as well. We do a company retreat at the beginning of the year and figure out where we want to get to.
And then all of this COVID-19 stuff happened, so we just took all of our goals and threw them away.
Instead, we just watch TV every day
Im just kidding.
I feel like a lot of people did, though! Like, Oh, no! Theres adversity?! I quit.
But this is why we have goals, right? Its so when we encounter adversity, we can overcome it.
So, heres how Id recommend treating your goals in a changing, often difficult, world.
Stick to the Goals You SetNo Matter What Happens
Dont change your goals at all. Figure out howdespite COVID-19you can achieve them. Im a bigger believer of saying how do I do this despite that?
I think this is where humans are weak. Or maybe its just modern-day Americans? Maybe other countries, as well.
They will do things, only as long as its easy and prepared for them ahead of time.
Well, I would diet. But theyve got to send the food to me in the mail, and they have to have a chef come over and cook it for methen Ill diet.
Making Adjustments vs. Abandoning It All
Yeah, you may have to alter your plan to achieve whatever goal you set because of the coronavirus or some other disruption. Adversity exists. And thats the whole point of, again, having the goal or the benchmark.
You can get there different ways.
We, for example, had a goal to raise and invest $10 million by the end of April. We pushed that a month.
We said, OK, well, lets take a month off. Nobodys doing anything right now.
We want to sit back for a month and see whats going on. So we pushed that goal back. I think thats fine.
But I would encourage people not to go and reshape all their goals just because things are hard. Instead, its time to use the hardness as a reason to step up and do a better job.
Remember that old quote: Dont wish things were easier. Wish you were better.
This is how we become better.
How will you overcome any adversity youre facing now?
i’m drinking twice as much.
Was aiming for 3 times as much
While this comes from one of my real estate mentors, it is applicable to any business or individual as well. Give it a look.
No, coronavirus should change its goals due to me.
Good thing Cuomo didn’t shut down the liquor stores...
Waiting until Covid hit to change your goals is like changing course after you hit the ice berg. You need to see that shit coming.
Re: Your goal to raise $10. Million.
Were you planning to do this as an IPO?
(Initial Public Offering)?
Sounds very exciting. Perhaps you have your own business idea, or you are considering taking on a franchise.
Some areas of retail are going to be reshaped by the COVID effect, especially if centered around perishable products.
My goals are much smaller, more pedestrian and less exciting.
I haven’t been on a plane in years. I’m waiting to see what sort of routine a typical passenger should expect.
I’ll want to go from California to Michigan and back again.
I would suspect we will need less TSA’s standing around, since their may be less people in line at once.
I will bet there will be less tolerance for bringing Companion Animals on board. People were already getting fed up sharing a packed plane interior with the dogs, cats, mini-horses and pot bellied pigs.
My goal is to be cancer free. I’m still waiting for my dr to re-open. I think my cancer is back. I was so done with all this corona crap months ago.
LOL
Has anyone put any of these guys on the spot as to why thy are necessary?
Nah. My motto is, “It’ll get done when it gets done.”
Not so much change but add 1 goal.
#1 Survive Coronavirus.
I am a real estate investor, now retired, but looking for a piece of land right now, because, why not. I had written goals that I rewrote (1 year goals) or reviewed (5 - 10+ year goals) every January.
Anything shorter than a year wasn’t a goal, it was an action plan for reaching the longer term goal. A goal usually required multiple action plans.
I was amazed at how I would write a goal, look at it and think, “you’ll never pull that off”, and at the end of the term, there it would be, not met but exceeded. Goals can be anything, it’s not just about money, it’s about the life you want to lead. Plan it and live it.
Massaging or adjusting goals is wise when Black Swan events appear, like this one. Roll with reality’s punch and plan the way forward.
It is partly a matter of maintaining the right perspective. Im doing a lot of genealogical research during the lockdown and always enjoy reading my great grandfathers story. In 1899, he moved his young family from North Rhine-Westphalia 700 miles east to Danzig (now Gdansk). He spent 40 years raising the family, acquiring property, founding the only battery manufacturing business in Danzig, growing it, and becoming influential in the community.
Then WW II started three miles from their house on the Westerplatte Peninsula on Sept 1, 1939. In late 1944, the Soviets were marching westward and Germans in the East were fleeing west. My great grandparents stayed until they were evicted by the Soviet Communists and left with only the clothes on their backs. The communists appropriated the entire family fortune which was quite sizable. After a five month journey (mostly walking) they got back to the hometown they had left 46 years earlier.
My great grandfather was 80 years old when he made that trek. He lived penniless for another five years and died the year before I was born.
So, yes, COVID and the now-ridiculous government lockdown is ruining a lot of lives. Thank God it is nothing like the horrible calamities that befell so many of our ancestors.
LOL! The only thing I’ve changed is not being able to get a haircut when I want one. But Andy Cuomo and Bill de Blasio seem to have been able to have access to a barber/stylist during their lockdown.
I am head of a small non-profit volunteer organization. When COVID-19 hit, we had to cancel our big fundraiser. I challenged the board to use this time to move forward in new ways that would make us stronger in the long run. So far everyone is energized and we are accomplishing thing we never dreamed of before. It has been an amazing experience.
Say you make some goals.
travel
putting on an event (concert, carnival, art show, lecture...)
Opening a business
Bringing a product to market
Learning a new trade like being a barber or bartender (hair always grows and even in tough times people drink)
With overreaching governments at nearly all levels shutting things down you will lose your shirt at random panic.
Why bother?
>>I would suspect we will need less TSAs standing around, since their may be less people in line at once.
You can’t furlough government workers. They like the teat.

My father was born in Holland in 1904. My mother was born in Canada in 1920. And the funny thing, is that the German is from my mother's side...not my father's. My Dad's family were all farmers and peasants. Up until I had my DNA done, nobody knew of any German connection. And along with 59% British, Welsh, and northwestern Europe connections, there's 2% each of Swedish, Norwegian, and Scottish in there too.
“Why bother?”
If you don’t bother you will fail, 100% chance every time.
if you bother, you might not fail. Or you might find an alternative path. Or you might fail, in which case you try again.
