“Woke” academics have taken to attacking almost everything that’s traditional in our culture. Math and science are denounced for their “whiteness,” and Shakespeare has to be replaced by writers from “marginalized groups.”
Now, it’s music that is on the chopping block.
As reported in The Post Millennial, “woke” professors at Oxford University are advocating a ban on the use of sheet music as well as an end to the curricular focus on classical European composers—lest the institution continue to be complicit in “white supremacy.”
In response to international Black Lives Matter demonstrations, a faculty board aims to overcome “white supremacy,” which includes the use of musical notation, which it calls a “colonialist representational system.”
Continuing to teach notation, the board contended, would be a “slap in the face” for some students because of its “connection to its colonial past.”
Additionally, the board proposed, music students should be allowed to skip acquiring musical skills such as playing the keyboard or conducting orchestras because the orchestral and keyboard repertoire “structurally centers white European music,” which causes “students of color great distress.”
Of course, that “great distress” is merely asserted. Somehow it did not derail the careers of great performers like Andre Watts.

If the academics and tastemakers and critics are now going to turn hundreds of years of accepted masterworks out on their ears, there are no standards and can be no standards.
Anything is art. Anything is “historic”.
Craft and detail mean nothing.

Much of classical music derives from German, Italian, Austrian, and Eastern European composers. Germany and Italy had only minor colonial involvement compared with Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Portugal. Austria and the Eastern European nations, except Russia, had no colonies outside the home continent. Even if a composer was, say, French, his work had nothing to do with French colonialism.

Remember this about “Colonialism.” It tried to bring civilization to the savages of the world.

Does this mean that the “woke” professors at Oxford have plans to launch an invasion on America and seize Bach recordings?
I don’t think so. These 90-lb woke weenies, sporting Lenin beards and Che T-shirts, would faint at the sight of armed Americans. I’m sure they’re much more comfortable sipping absinthe at outdoor French cafes in the afternoon and hiding in mommy’s basement at night.
Why isn’t the universal response to this a scornful laugh, a shake of the head and a full dismissal of the fools who spew it? We’ve go to start ridiculing the ridiculous.
