“Indeed, medieval times developed manners and courtesy.”
Exactly. The Book of Courtesy should be mandatory reading in pre-schools.
BTTT
GMRC … used to be taught in schools (it was a white thing)
Act the cad in those times and you’d be likely to be run through with some mannerly steel.
Good article.

Remember too that the “Peace of God” and the somewhat later “Truce of God” movements developed at this time. These Christian movements, over time, successfully created rules of warfare accepted by European kings and nobles of the time, such as not targeting non-combatants, leaving women and children in peace, leaving church property inviolate, treating churches as sacred, not fighting on holy days, etc... By the middle of the twelfth century the number of proscribed days was extended until there was left only some eighty days for fighting!
This strong Christian movements contributed to the rise of chivalry, and became the roots of the modern western concept of “human rights.”
Our modern age has great advancements in wealth, comfort and health, but we are far more violent, greedy and far less pious.
George Washington’s Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation, the short version of which is a favorite among homeschooling families, was his copy of a translation of one of these etiquette books.
Some of the rules were very much of their time: don’t hog the warmth from the fireplace, don’t spit, etc.,and others, like don’t hum in the presence of others, were still being taught when I was young.
George Washington wrote such a book. It might prove to be useful.
