[VANITY] A rant about Extreme Environmentalism

Posted on 05/20/2024 2:34:37 AM PDT by Windcatcher

For years we've heard that humans are the problem when it comes to the environment. The complaints in recent years have become so intense and extreme that we're being told that humans have been likened to a harmful virus, even to the point that some individuals have begun a "human extinction project" in the crazed belief that the only chance to "save the planet" is to erase humans from existence. It's gotten to the point where hardly a day goes by where we don't hear about someone who expresses a desire to see the Earth "depopulated", at least to the point where humans aren't a detrimental force on the Earth.

Well, I've had enough, and by God, I'm going to say something.

Who am I? I'm a nobody. That is to say, I don't hold any special office, title, or otherwise special responsibility in today's society. I am in no way, however, an ignoramus.

I do hold, for instance, a Masters in Physics, from Bryn Mawr College. I also hold a second Masters in Engineering Science. So it's safe to say that I'm at least educated. I've also studied college-level History, English, Philosophy, and Theology, and I've studied a foreign language. Academics might call me "well-rounded", for what that's worth. I've even published a novel.

The only point here is to say that I'm at least somewhat knowledgeable about how the world works. I'm extremely confident that I'm more knowledgeable than your average "environmental activist".

But, let me get us back on track. I've had enough, and I'm going to say something.

The extremists would have us believe that humans are a danger to the environment and we must be at the very least culled, if not eliminated. They could not be more ignorant and wrong.

1. LIFE ON EARTH IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, DOOMED.

Any astrophysicist worth his salt will tell you that the Sun is getting hotter and more luminous. Actually, I'm stating this backwards: it's getting hotter, and as a result, is getting more luminous. It happens to all -- repeat, ALL -- main-sequence stars like our own. As they burn their hydrogen fuel, helium settles in the star's core, and hydrogen is fused in an ever-more-compressed shell around that helium. While there may be plenty of hydrogen fuel to burn, THE STAR GETS HOTTER OVER TIME. It's a natural part of a star's life.

As the star ages, its habitable zone moves ever outward. Our Sun is no exception. Eventually, Earth will no longer be in our Sun's habitable zone. You must understand this. Life cannot exist on the Earth forever. We're often told that our Sun is halfway through its life, but that is misleading when it comes to what matters to us, which is HOW LONG EARTH WILL REMAIN IN ITS HABITABLE ZONE. By our best models, we have at most another billion years.

2. THE ENVIRONMENT IS ULTIMATELY ABOUT LIFE.

This seems fundamental, but I honestly wonder whether "environmentalists" really understand its implications. Protecting the environment really means protecting a planet's ability to support living organisms. It doesn't stop there: for example, one must not only protect the whales' environment, but the environment of what they consume, and the environment that those things eat, and so on. We need to protect the environment for the ENTIRE FOOD CHAIN -- everything from bacteria on up. But, ultimately, it's about LIFE. It's not about rocks, metallic deposits, or anything upon which life does not depend. The point here is that WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PROTECTING LIFE.

3. HUMANS ARE THE ONLY SOLUTION.

Before I elaborate on this, remember: LIFE ON EARTH IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, DOOMED. Our star is aging. IT'S GETTING HOTTER, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO.

If we wish to protect life, if we wish to prevent the destruction of what makes life on Earth special, WE MUST ULTIMATELY COME UP WITH A WAY TO TRANSPLANT THAT LIFE SOMEWHERE ELSE. We must -- there is no other option. Our star is aging and will eventually exterminate life on Earth. Even if we come up with a way to transplant life to a planet like Mars, bear in mind that our Sun will -- absolutely WILL -- exhaust its hydrogen fuel and turn into a dead white dwarf. Every bit of life that environmentalists hold special WILL become extinct unless it can exist somewhere else -- around another star.

(Oh, and we can forget about nearby stars like Alpha Centauri A or B -- those will die at about the same time ours does -- and Sirius will die far, FAR sooner).

To the very best of our knowledge, humans are the only species that EVER evolved on Earth with the knowledge and understanding to even contemplate transplanting Earth-based life elsewhere much less constructing the ability to do so. Now, bear the following in mind, and think very hard on this: the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, and life has existed on it for the last four of that. In all that time, only once -- ONCE -- has a species evolved with even the remote possibility of carrying out such a Herculean task.

Once.

What are the chances that such a species might evolve again before the Earth becomes inhospitable to life due to increasing solar luminance? I would argue, nil. Remember, there are only ONE billion years left, not four. One.

The chance? Nil. Humans are it. Period. If we die, or die enough so as to make us ineffective, so does all Earth-based life.

Kill us, and you kill everything else. Or do environmentalists really believe that descendants of (for example) bees could build spacecraft that can ferry everything from plankton to blue whales to another star? That is the sheer scale of the task we face. I shudder to even think of how one could ferry a blue whale into orbit and keep it alive much less get it onto something that could traverse distances measured in light-years (and then get it down from orbit to a planet's ocean). I have no doubt that no such organism will ever evolve on Earth again that could even consider such a task much less carry it out.

Have radical environmentalists thought that far ahead? Of course not, and it's maddening. They're arrogant in their defiance of logic, and ignorant to the point that what they desire is entirely counterproductive to what they profess to seek.

Will reason work? Human history suggests no. Will a hard punch in the face work? I wonder.

I'm not sure what else to say. God, I've had enough. I dislike ignorance, but I DESPISE arrogant ignorance.

Very nice rant. You are expressing what so many of us would also want to say.

My thoughts …….
You mentioned God. I’m quit sure He has a plan to take care of this problem. It’s written in his Word, in the last chapter called Revelation.

I agree with your assessment.
Eventually we will have to leave Earth or at least send our DNA to another system.
Any chance we can send the Telephone Sanitizers and SJW to another system?

I would argue that God does indeed have a plan — US. He made us and gave us the reason and intellect to carry it out, and DEMANDS that we use those gifts. The responsibility was handed to us, and it’s our duty to carry it out. We would be remiss in asking Him to do it for us.

By our best models, we have at most another billion years.

The human species is only about 200,000 years old, so don't worry about it. We'll be long gone before that happens. Before the sun gets too hot, the earth will see about 10 more mass extinctions in the next billion years.

I would add the word “hypocritical” to your description of arrogant ignorance.

I note that not one of those who call for “depopulation” helps their cause by killing themselves.

Yes, the earth and our entire solar system will have an end.

This is the way I see it. At one point in the last 50 years, pollution was at an all time high. Acid rain, poisoned water supplies from farming and air pollution from power plants and burning of garbage poisoned the environment. What’s to look at here is where did this all come from. Well, most of it came from Democrat states, with unions and kickbacks to Democrat politicians.

The pollution narrative could not be sustained due to the high costs of remediating it, so a new narrative was created and that was global cooling. That narrative took us from the 70’s to the 80’s. Well that wasn’t happening because when the cleanup started, someone decided to turn it into Global Warming. Now that the air and the smog lifted, with weather patterns changing, there was something to lock onto by the rats.

The real solution is for governments to clean up their own pollution issues which will result in cleaner resources. So, what do we as a nation have to do? Well, just promote cleaning up pollution and that will change everything. We need to take that narrative and run with it. Don’t fight fire with fire. Fight fire with hi-test gasoline.

That’s how we win.

There’s been 5 mass extinction events on Earth as far as we know and we know very little about Earth’s 4.5 billion year existence. There will be many more before the sun gets to a point this planet is uninhabitable.

60 million or so years ago, Antarctica was a tropical rain forest... Guess that’s a result of all that dinosaur shxt /s.

Anyone with half a brain knows the climate changes but it’s not man made, it’s a natural occurrence because of the sun and earths interaction that’s been going on for 4.5 billion years.

That being said, those with half a brain or more know this, those without are climate cultist with strong liberal leanings.

I’ve often said the right needs to step up and put an end to the endless BS. They need to speak up LOUDLY and more often to educate the idiots.

It is a radical cult and religion and it is well past time to classify it as such. If they insist on separation of Church and State then so be it, this very real religion should be included just as well. Get it out of the educational system and get it out of government.
