Why Not Ask Walter Staudt in New Braunfels, TX About 70s Texas Air Guard?
Sept 12, 2004 | Gerard Van der Leun

The Washington Times today notes, in an article about the forgeries, that Walter Straudt isn't returning calls from New Braunfels, Texas. I wonder if any enterprising newspaper or other organization has sent anyone out to his home to just ring the doorbell. Surely the old fashioned way of just going "Ding-Dong' Anybody home?" can still work.

I read in an article that he says he doesn't give interviews anymore.

I think the guy is like 84 years old and in bad health. I can understand giving him a break.

It's apparent that he's not interested in talking.

Anyone who presses the matter is apt to get a response
not consistent with their agenda.

So let the "Bush was AWOL" loonies be the ones to get bit.

Well, let's see. We've got a key person, a member of the military, who would be one of the key sources regarding an issue that now involves the reputation and fate of a major media figure, the fate of a major media organization, the outcome of a national election, the future of the Republic, and by extension the future of Western Civilization, and the consensus should be that, because he is old and perhaps in poor health, he should not be bothered and be left alone.

I understand the reticence and the desire to respect privacy very well, but somehow I don't think they trump the larger issues.

Without sounding mean, he may not be lucid enough to do interviews. No one knows what this guy's health has been or is right now. With the doubts already raised, the momentum on this has been stunted and Bush can continue to ignore it. I mean anybody who really expects at this juncture in the campaign that CBS or Harkin are going to apologize is just not politically savy.
Let the old man rest.

Given the way the MSM has misquoted and distorted what many other people have said (then accused them of 'backtracking' when they try to set the record straight), I can understand the man's reluctance to speak.

from the other thread:

"I don't give interviews," Staudt gruffly told The Associated Press this week while peeking through a narrowly opened door of his home in an upscale subdivision in this city near San Antonio. "Goodbye. You're bothering me."

Staudt is already on the record.

http://betsyspage.blogspot.com/

Pertinent info from above link:

Over the past 16 years, however, Staudt has been quoted on the subject in a number of major newspapers and at least one book. He has been consistent and often colorful in his basic messages: George W. Bush was a fine pilot and no strings were pulled to get him into the Texas guard.

In March, the 81-year-old ex-general had this to say to the Spokane Spokesman-Review about the president: ''I love the guy. I'm so tired of this negative crap about him.''

Six years ago, the Washington Post attributed these words to Staudt regarding Bush and his route into the air guard: ''I'll tell you, he was an asset. ... Anyone who suggests there was family influence to get him in is a damn liar.''

"... I can understand the man's reluctance to speak."

And for all your reasons and more so can I. What I can't understand is the reluctance of so many in the major media to knock on the door and ask.

Sounds like he meant what he said.

Yessir....He left little room to get all nuancy about alternative interpretations, which is probably why no one seems to be reporting what he has said.
