Durham, N.C. — A Durham woman said she shot a dog with a shotgun and left it in the yard overnight Jan. 11 immediately after it bit her 2-year-old daughter.
Durham police charged Tasheka Laquon Beatty, 33, of 311 E. Knox St., with animal cruelty the next day.
Beatty said she is not a cruel person, but she had to protect her child, Latalya, who now has a large scar on her left cheek and may need facial reconstruction surgery.
"I do love animals, but I ask somebody, 'what would you do, if that was your child?" she said.
Beatty said she had been keeping the dog for a friend for about a month and that Latalya was very attached to it. But the dog turned on her daughter on Jan. 11, a morning Beatty said she'll never forget.

shooting a dog is not cruel. Someone may not like the idea, but cruelty it is not..

My guess is that the toddler had probably been playing too rough with the dog for too long and the dog eventually got fed up with it. This kind of thing isn’t that unusual.
I don’t really fault her for shooting the dog under the circumstances though it was probably unnecessary once she took the dog outside. What I do fault her with is keeping an adult dog she has had for only a month around her 2 year old daughter.
I love animals but would shoot the dog a couple times.
Could very well be, which is why smart parents never permit small children and dogs to be unsupervised while in eachother’s presence. You never know when the kid will get the idea to pull doggy’s ears or tail or hug too hard, etc.
I understand some people like them, but it seems that every story like this involves a pit bull.
Since I live here in Durham, I can say with moderate certainty that the dog probably didn’t just have a shotgun, it also had a 9mm Glock with Homeboy side-mounted sights, some neck bling, a “grill,” and was rollin’ on 22-inch spinners.
That having been said, I’ve never been one for banning dog breeds—it’s the owner’s fault in situations like this. This lady had the proper response to a dog running loose that attacked her little girl. She ended the problem.
The other interesting thing is this—311 East Knox Street is the address of the Durham Rescue Mission homeless shelter. How many women living in a homeless shelter have a shotgun with them? (Not saying that it’s a bad thing, I just won’t be surprised if it gets her thrown out.)

Her parents (or parent) are/is guilty of giving her an unfortunate name.
I’m having an issue with a neighbors dog. We’ve gone through all the regular channels (dog officer, police). Nothing has been done, and this even after the dog bit a jogger. So now since I have chickens I am able under my states General Law to shoot and kill the dog if it goes after my livestock (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).
She should have buried the dog and told no one.
I am not sure if that was possible considering she had to take her daughter to the hospital.

I have no problem with her shooting the dog. Shoot it until it is dead.
OK, I read the entire story...looks like she must’ve been staying somewhere else (to dogsit, or maybe with family?) and that’s where it happened.
I don’t think she’s in trouble for shooting the dog as much as she is for not finishing it off. Animal Control said it was still alive the next day.

Read the article - She shot the dog and let it lay wounded. It took it more than a day to die. She should be charged. How hard would it have been to finish it off? Did she only have 1 shell?
Her first mistake was keeping an unfamiliar dog around a 2 year old. Her second mistake, she forgot to shovel and shut up.
So if this was a person who was attacking her daughter, it’s okay to shoot them in defense of the family. Any jury wanna tell me that this is somehow different???
