Learn your history please. there were no ‘so-called Protestants’ during the Crusades. All Christians were essentially under Rome or under the Byzantium Orthodox Bishops.
If he's sinking himself, high religious officials stepping in and attracting fire to themselves will only hurt their religion.
The question is more why the media doesn't publicize Obama's comments (but the reasons for that are well known as it is).
