Back in July, it was announced that waterpark company Schlitterbahn had their sights set on putting the "biggest, baddest" water park ever in Fort Lauderdale. But now the people who operate Rapids Waterpark is suing the city to stop that from happening.
In an 11-page complaint filed on Wednesday, Premier Parks LLC who own and operate Rapids say that Fort Lauderdale is violating a competitive bid process by giving Schlitterbahn Waterparks & Resorts a long-term lease without allowing any other developers to bid and submit their own ideas for a water park.
According to that lease, Schlitterbahn Waterparks & Resorts has been given the rights to develop and operate a water park on approximately 64-acres of land close to the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

Years have gone by while this was still up in the air and not a peep out of you. Now that it looks like this project will come to fruition, suddenly you want to bid on it. The REAL REASON why you are now interested in building a waterpark at that location is because you don't want competition.
Schlitterbahn owner Jeff Henry is more than just a waterpark owner, he is a designer who treats his waterpark designs as art. Henry has promised that the Ft. Lauderdale Schlitterbahn will be his last and BEST waterpark. It will probably be the BEST such park in the world and its proposed location is only about 10 minutes from where I live.
I have been waiting YEARS for this Schlitterbahn and now suddenly Rapids Waterpark acts like it is interested after silence from them. All they care about is keeping out the competition.
When I hear ‘water park’, I think ‘e. coli’.
I just see all the kiddos there in swim diapers and kind of gag...
...great vacation destination.
The one at New Braunfels, TX is really neat. Comal River tubing/etc. closed due to flooding but will reopen soon. Lovely place.
Schlitterbahn doesn't help.
I suspect that Rapids knows that Schlitterbahn will bury them.
Not having been to the Rapids park, I don’t know if it’s any good, or if it’s like Water Country USA that is being run into the ground by Busch Gardens.
Ft. Lauderdale Schlitterbahn is supposed to be TWICE as big as Rapids Waterpark. More importantly, Jeff Henry has promised to use his artistic design skills to make the Ft. Lauderdale Schlitterbahn to be the BEST in the world.
This is Broward county...home of hanging chads and the most corrupt county officials in the USA. This will be settled by who pays the biggest bribes.
Comal River tubing! Big thumbs up!
Just reading the name Schlitterbahn causes me to conjur up similar visions.
I don’t see what the harm is, South Florida is paved over from Palm Beach down to Key Largo anyways, may as well build something nice for the community. The last water park in Broward was by where the roller coaster is now. As a younger man I went a few times before it closed down. Fun stuff.
Well, the population there is well represented by the third world, but park prices should control that to some extent.
