Monstrous 1-ton ocean sunfish caught in Russia's far east, thrown to the bears (PHOTO)

The group of Sakhalin fishermen did not expect to find the Lovecraftian monster in their nets as they took to the sea for smaller fry on Saturday. The enormous fish, considered a delicacy in some cultures, proved to be a dead weight as it didn't make it to the shore fresh. Russian fishermen pulled a 1,100 kg ocean sunfish which got stuck in their net in the waters near Iturup island, according to Sakhalin info. Also known as moonfish and mola, the bizarre-looking creature is the heaviest bony fish on Earth.

“There has been no such specimen that I can remember; there is the dolphinfish, also known for its size and reaching 1.5 meters, but I have never seen a sunfish weighing more than a ton here before,” said fisherman Artur Balkarov.

By the time the fascinating behemoth was brought ashore three days later, it had begun rotting. The fishermen had no choice but take it to a dumping site where locals bring their fishing waste for wild animals, including bears.

While trade in moonfish meat is prohibited in the EU, a number of Asian countries, such as Japan and Taiwan, see it as delicious treat and handy ingredient in traditional medicine.

In one photo, you can clearly see the lines of the net embedded into it’s flesh.

Too bad the meat went bad, could have supplied a Captain D’s for a year!

Tuna fishing before dawn off New Jersey we had one breach next to the boat once. Kinda funny to hear 40 guys yell “WHOA!” in unison. The “Holy .....”s came afterward.

I saw my first sunfish at the Monterey aquarium.

It caused be to reflect on the diversity of life on earth.

If you don’t like Sunfish, you suck.

A dozen fried bluegill ain’t bad either.

It’s a monsterously large fish, but must not have many predators. It may not even be that dangerous unless it is fast, aggressive and tends to attack in groups. Look at how small the mouth is in proportion to everything else. I don’t see any big jaw bones to open wide and swallow or bite anything massive. Perhaps it lives mostly on vegetation.

And people say my fear of open water is unfounded!

Good Lord! That just set me back another DECADE while I’m trying to get my nerve up to go on a cruise!

I guess fishermen get used to inhaling air heavy with fish oil. A whiff of that air would knock most people out.
