Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions star Selma Blair reveals her multiple sclerosis diagnosis

Selma Blair has revealed that she has recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The actress, who is known for film roles including Cecile in Cruel Intentions and Vivian in Legally Blonde, shared the news in an Instagram post – having quit Twitter over the summer – in which she praised her family, friends and colleagues for their support.

Posting a photo of herself at a costume fitting for new Netflix sci-fi show Another Life, she wrote: "The brilliant costumer #Allisaswanson not only designs the pieces #harperglass will wear on this new #Netflixshow , but she carefully gets my legs in my pants, pulls my tops over my head, buttons my coats and offers her shoulder to steady myself.

"I have #multiplesclerosis . I am in an exacerbation. By the grace of the lord, and will power and the understanding producers at Netflix , I have a job. A wonderful job. I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it ."

Multiple sclerosis (also known as MS) is a lifelong condition which can affect the brain and/or spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.

The actress continued to add that she was diagnosed on August 16, but added that she has "probably had this incurable disease for 15 years at least", and praised the "love and support" that her friends, including Cruel Intentions co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar, have given her in the months since.

"I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others," she added. "And even to myself. You can't get help unless you ask. It can be overwhelming in the beginning. You want to sleep. You always want to sleep. So I don't have answers."

She went on to urge people to help each other, writing: "I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me , dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up. It takes a whole day for me alone. Thank you and may we all know good days amongst the challenges."

Sad news. And very unfortunate that it took her so long to get a diagnosis.

I'd say best known as Hellboy's love interest in the two movies.

Best wishes to her.

MS sucks. Any neurological disease is a horrible sentence. Mine is in remission. But it was like being hooked up to a battery charger—at different parts of my body for hours at a time.

Every once in a while, if I haven’t exercised enough,it lets me know it’s still there waiting to make a return.

Prayers for her. And her family.

It has been the only time in my life where living did not seem like the best option. I hope her family is there for her.

Would not wish that upon even the worst of Hollyweird.

BTW, Hollyweird is now a word...no red underlining on the draft.

MS is one of the worst diseases that can impact us.

We have lost friends and people that we have known to this terrible disease.

In the past decade, it seems that more healthy people in their late 30’s to early 40’s have been diagnosed with MS.

There is a relatively new drug out that seems get patients into remission and some recovery:

Selma also starred in a short-lived sitcom called Kath and Kim, the U.S. version of an Australian hit TV show. She plays Kim, a very spoiled, lazy snack food addicted adult child still living with her mom played by Molly Shannon.
