What's more, the country, which has ambitious gas export expansion plans, is losing a valuable commodity in the fire "for which we could get significant profits," Berdymukhamedov said. Turkmenistan plans to boost export to destinations including Pakistan, India, Iran, and even Western Europe over the next nine years.

This would not be the first attempt to put out the fire that has been burning for five decades. One previous attempt failed back in Soviet times. Then, in 2010, Berdymukhamedov again ordered experts to find a way to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful as well.

I thought the burning gas crater was called Darvaza. Is that name not in use anymore?

On location at the tourist site in Turkmenistan, in the day time.

Not sure where they will get the dirt to fill the hole. After all, everything around it is environmentally sensitive and needs protection.

Why the reports and permits alone from the Turkmenistan EPA would take many years about $100 to obtain.

Only way I could think to put it out would be to flood the hole quickly. Flood it to the point the flames are on top of the water with the crater cooling below it then detonate an air burst nearby to extinguish the flames. Only feasible if there is a water source nearby that could fill that sized crater fast enough to overflow it and cool it enough it doesn’t reignite when the water level drops.

Is Red Adair still alive by chance? He might have some feasible ideas.

Reminds me of that fire in Centralia, PA that's been burning since 1962.

The Centralia mine fire is a coal-seam fire that has been burning underneath the borough of Centralia, Pennsylvania, United States, since at least May 27, 1962...At its current rate, it could continue to burn for over 250 years

My husband is from the area, knew people who had evacuated and took me close enough to see the smoke rising - it's nothing like that burning pit in Turkey, though, just smoke.

Throw Stacy Abrams in the hole to block it.

Of course, her melting fat may create an even bigger conflagration.

= = =

When Brandon finds out, he will want to keep it burning.

But with his success rate, it will go out.

"One previous attempt failed back in Soviet times"

The Soviets did accomplish the equivalent on one of their "fires" by closing the hole with an atomic blast... Very successful...

I’m sure that if he requests it, all of the Hollywood globull warming fanatics will fly there to help him pour water on the flames.
