Associated Press All 3 defendants convicted of hate crimes in Arbery killing RUSS BYNUM Tue, February 22, 2022, 8:18 AM·5 min read BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The three men convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s fatal shooting were found guilty of federal hate crimes Tuesday for violating Arbery’s civil rights and targeting him because he was Black.
The jury reached its decision after several hours of deliberation on the charges against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan.
During the trial, prosecutors showed roughly two dozen text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist slurs and made derogatory comments about Black people. The FBI wasn’t able to access Greg McMichael’s phone because it was encrypted.
The McMichaels grabbed guns and jumped in a pickup truck to pursue Arbery after seeing him running in their neighborhood outside the Georgia port city of Brunswick in February 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own pickup and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery. The killing became part of a larger national reckoning on racial injustice after the graphic video leaked online two months later.
Defense attorneys contended the three didn’t chase and kill Arbery because of his race but acted on the earnest, though erroneous, suspicion that Arbery had committed crimes in their neighborhood.

All three should be taken to the town square and publicly executed.
Ahmaud Arbery’s Criminal Record Cannot Be Used By Defense in Murder Trial, Judge Rules

“Arbery pleaded guilty to guilty to charges that he carried a gun onto a high school campus in 2013, a year after he graduated. Rodney Ellis, police chief for the Glynn County school system, testified at Wednesday’s hearing that Arbery tried to evade officers on foot and stopped only when two of them pointed guns at him.
“He was also arrested in 2017 on charges that he tried to steal a TV from a Walmart. Court records show he pleaded guilty to shoplifting. Arbery was on probation at the time of his death.”
All three are pigs. They’ll get no support on FR.
They’ve already been convicted of murder. Why this additional trial, other than to appease BLM?
Yeah, but listening to this illiterate family now on the news, is cringe worthy.
Agree.
There are many defendants to support but these are not among them. They make us all look bad when the leftists paint us with the same broad brush.
They seem to think it's 1955. It isn't.
I will say I don't ever think "hate crime" is a good excuse for double jeopardy.
Sorry, that is ridiculous.
Only one guy shot at him, and he only shot after the Black male grabbed the barrel of the rifle.
If you or I had been walking around inside a house we did not own, in a neighborhood we did not live in, we would have put our hands up when people pointed guns at us and waited for the Police to arrive.
What disturbs me a great deal is that Mac Michael was retired LEO.
I fully supported their convictions on murder. I think adding “hate crime” is STUPID! Pretty much every murder is a hate crime. Life in prison? Fine. Death penalty? Wouldn’t bother me - for MURDER. But adding “Murder is worse when it is racist” is stupid.
If someone murders me, I want them punished. I don’t care WHY they murdered me!
Unfortunately that is not the case. I’ve already been “lectured” on the FR about how justified these murderers were.
I always wonder: What crime is NOT a hate crime? It seems that every type of crime involves hatred in one form or another. Mr Arbery was carrying around some hate, or so it seems.
The offenders are useless idiots, however. If the guy was stealing or vandalizing, he should have been arrested and sent to jail. If the law is not responding, there are ways to get fools to stop messing with your property that don’t involve killing them.
I might catch some grief for this, but I think the best outcome was achieved: The thief is dead, and the three stooges are going to jail for life.
I’m going to step in with an observation.
Growing up, there was a guy who ran an independant gas station. He got a rep a being a would undercut anybody to have the cheapest gas - and I’m talking 25 cent a gallon days. He would lose money just to beat the guy down the street. As the community grew, and he became ‘known’, he joined the sheriff’s department as an auxiliary and later lost a run for sheriff.
At bedrock though, the guy was kind of a hot head and had a temper. Like the father here, he was ‘known’ as liking the enforcer role. He was an adult bully, and people got in the habit of getting out of his way. On the social scene though, if there was a neighbor kid squalling tires, racing, reckless driving or whatever, he was the guy who felt empowered to solve the problem. If a situation had come up like this, I can see that guy responding similarly.
