A 19-year-old college student developed sepsis and lost his legs and fingers after eating leftover Chinese takeout food in what a doctor described as a “perfect storm” of events.
Dr. Bernard Hsu, a licensed toxicologist, described how the young man became severely ill after eating tainted leftovers, including lo mein, chicken and rice.
“This was a freak accident happening in a perfect storm sequence of events,” Hsu, who did not treat the man, in a YouTube video on Feb 16. The teen’s case was first reported in March 2021 in The New England Journal of Medicine, which detailed how he was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital as he was suffering from “shock, multiple organ failure, skin mottling, and a rapidly progressive reticular rash.”

Yikes! Not five minutes ago, I ate Mu Shu pork leftovers from Chef Chu’s! So far I’m feeling ok. If you don’t hear from me in a few days, send out the search parties.

I was aware eating at restaurants could cost you an arm and a leg due to inflation but this is a shock.
Poor kid. Hope he gets what he needs to have a happy and fulfilling life.
My college age nephew last weekend got sick after he decided eating leftover shrimp scampi that had been sitting on a plate by the sink for an entire day was an OK idea.

At least you didn’t try any chicken there. But because people ordered “Mu Shu” and the staff said it aloud to each other, the cats in the back kitchen ran away thinking they heard “shoo.” So pork replaced the “chicken” items.

they’re claiming he needed multiple vaccines for meningitis and because he only got one that’s why this happened. I call complete BS to that. I fully blame the ONE vaccine for this.

I just finished leftover Shrimp Toast, Steamed Pork Dumplings, Lo Mein, Egg Drop Soup, and Pork Fried Rice.
Been doing that for 30+ years.
I have zero qualms about The Emerald Garden’s (Shrewsbury, PA) quality of food.
Sounds to me like that guy’s got other problems and issues, rather than the food itself..
He’d have been better off croaking.
So...how long after the food was delivered did he consume it? How long had these leftovers been sitting at room temp? Were they ever refrigerated? One wonders since his roommate became ill and vomited after eating from the same order.
The next morning the kids all want "Chinese breakfast" so I'll put my wok on the stove and get some peanut oil really hot. Throw in the leftovers, stir in about half a dozen eggs and scramble it all up. Add some precooked breakfast sausage and bacon, both chopped up, some more soy sauce, and it's a damn good breakfast.
Never got sepsis. Probably re-cooking everything helps with microbes.

I’m from Vancouver where it’s literally called Hongcouver due to the many Chinese restaurants and eateries around, and I’ve eaten at cheap Chicom places where the “chicken” and “beef” look like they mystery meat. Good thing I have a steel stomach.
Many years ago, I ordered orange chicken with my then GF and the chinese waitress says “Orange Cat”. I said “excuse me?”. Her: “oh no, me joke only heehee”
