The 1927 Bombing That Remains America’s Deadliest School Massacre
Smithsonian ^ | May 18, 2017 | Lorraine Boissoneault

Columbine. Virginia Tech. University of Texas. Sandy Hook. America’s terrible history of school shootings is a list whose members can’t be named alone. Talk about any single one, and the others always hover on the periphery. But one name rarely gets mentioned among the others, the oldest and deadliest school massacre in U.S. history: the Bath School bombing.

Every mass murder involves a sick and twisted individual. But not every one involves guns. Had guns been prohibited in 1927, this massacre still would have happened. And if all guns are prohibited tomorrow, massacres will still happen. Homemade bombs, Molotov cocktails, etc. will be used instead.

We’ve got to think this thing through carefully. As others here have noted, knee-jerk reactions are rarely useful.

It’s not the gun, its the PERSON.

Knee-jerk, sure, if they are really trying to achieve a safer society.
But what if this just another useful event for them to pass more laws to further their goal of disarming the general population?

Michigan wins again. Guns are not necessary for school attacks. Just look at China. Lots of kindergarten attacks but no guns. You can kill a lot of kids with a sward. And teachers too.

If guns had been prohibited in 1927, Japan would have invaded us.

Wait! He shot the dynamite with a rifle, so it was a gun crime. Kidding.

Most folks who are arguing for more gun control want to ban “assault rifles”. And by that I guess they mean semi-auto rifles.

Well, let’s say they succeed in banning semi-auto rifles, and semi-auto pistols too. That still leaves the monster with a wide array of weapons to choose from. Revolvers, swords, Molotov cocktails, etc.

Nope, the banning approach is wrong. It’s unconstitutional. And more than that, it simply won’t work. Just as Prohibition didn’t work back in the 1920s.

That is exactly what is happening.

Ever notice how the "gun control" issue stays relatively back-burner until just after some widely publicized (some might say over publicized) event?

There's a reason for that. So-called "gun control" proposals are so stupid that any reasoned consideration of them would quickly reveal how laughably ineffective they are. There are thousands of "gun control" laws on the books across the US at the national, state, and local levels. Thousands. Obviously they do not work, yet magically somehow just one more will work? This is "the" solution? The suggestion would be hilarious if they weren't actually serious.

"Gun control" proposals are intentionally held back by their advocates until just after some media-frenzied event. Then, when emotions are high these proposals are trotted out again. "We've got to do something!" "How could you be against my XXXXX gun control measure? Do you want another XYZ?!"

These people are the worst kind of manipulators. They know their proposals are terrible on many levels. They wait and try to take advantage of a tragic situation to further their power agenda. "Gun control" advocates are opportunistic scum.

Back when our suburban town was just a small farming village, Dupont had a sales warehouse on the edge of town where they sold dynamite to farmers throughout the county

I remember my great uncle (who was born in 1880 and died in 1978) telling me how when he was boy, he and is his brother would load up a cart, and deliver the dynamite to farmers 20-30 miles away, and he’d get paid a nickel, or something like that.

I guess he’d be a domestic terrorist today.

And I would say the significant majority of mass murders are committed by leftists.

To which I’d add:

My father lived in a small city (not a town, it was legally a city). Well, on the outskirts of the city there was a wooded area.

My father would openly bring his 22 rifle to school, and lock it in his locker. No one said a word. After school he’d carry his rifle across town to the woods, and shoot crow. Then he’d give the crows to locals for food.

This was back in the 1930s. If he tried it today 25 different police agencies would respond, all with guns blazing.

Most folks who are arguing for more gun control want to ban “assault rifles”. And by that I guess they mean semi-auto rifles.

The sheer idiocy behind this drive is nearly overwhelming.

For the un-informed or ill-informed lib lurkers out there - and if you hold on to lefty liberal beliefs you are by definition un-informed, ill-informed, or just plain clinically delusional. Anyway, two points for our ignorant lefty lurkers:

One. Ban "assault rifles?" Even if you come up with a meaningful and useful definition of "assault rifle" (not easy, in fact probably impossible in and of itself)... Such a ban would be useless. That's not my opinion, that is a demonstrated fact. We had an assault rifle ban in the US. For 10 years, 1994 through 2004 there was such a ban in place. It had no affect on crime rates. None. Ergo, proposing an "assault weapon" ban is to propose something we already know does not work. It is a pointless, useless gesture. Advocating such a measure shows you are not serious about improving public safety, you are a fool.

Two. Even if you delude yourself (as libs are wont to do) into believing "...no, wait, this time it'll be different..." Even if you succeed in coming up with a meaningful definition of "assault weapon"... Even if you succeed in getting it passed... Even if it is completely (ie. unrealistically) successful, criminals actually obey this law while breaking so many others... Congratulations, by jumping through all those impossible or nearly impossible hoops, by blatantly trampling on US Citizen's rights, violating both the intent and letter of the US Constitution... You have now succeeded in stopping less than 2% of gun crime in America. That's right, the fruit of all your labors and unrealistic expectations is that 98% of crime will continue. Bravo, you must be so proud to have wasted so much for so little.

The stories are all the same

- troubled individual everybody knew about, including law enforcement, but nothing done

- ends up with weapons way more expensive than most can afford

- gets into school grounds, always due to someone’s incompetence

- law enforcement incompetent response

Many of the shootings (e.g. Columbine, Sandy Hook) were committed by sick individuals who wanted to be know for posterity.
Both above, they were hoping a movie will be made on them.
I think, if we stopped talking about those case, it would go away.
Michael Moore actually made a movie about Columbine, it made me so sick, that he granted them their wish!

After the blast, another 500 lbs. of unexploded dynamite was discovered alongside a gallon of gasoline. The murderer was determined to say the least.
