The scientists behind the invention say a mechanical hand fitted with the smart skin showed a remarkable ability to learn to react to external stimuli such as a jab in the palm.
It uses a new type of processing system based on 'synaptic transistors, which mimics the brain's neural pathways in order to learn' to feel pain.
Experts have been working for decades to build artificial skin with touch sensitivity, with one widely-explored method featuring an array of contact sensors across an electronic skin's surface to allow it detect when it comes into contact with an object.
But these sensors typically produce a large volume of data that can take time to be properly processed by a computer and responded to, causing delays which would reduce the skin's potential effectiveness in real-world tasks.
A team of engineers from the University of Glasgow have now come up with a new prototype 'e-skin' which they believe is a big advancement in the area of touch-sensitive robotics.
They drew inspiration from how the human peripheral nervous system interprets signals from skin in order to eliminate the delays and power consumption of previous concepts

Why, exactly, would you want to create a robot that ‘feels’ pain other than for testing or furthering AI capabilities?
To practice punishment and torture techniques that can be used on conservatives so that it won’t show of course
Prosthetics, I think.
Americans have been anxiously awaiting robots that feel pain. I would like to kick the sh*t out of the ones I have to deal with every time I try to call a company about something.
Sex dolls for sadists
Interesting.

“Marvin trudged on down the corridor, still moaning. "...and
then of course I've got this terrible pain in all the
diodes down my left hand side..."
"No?" said Arthur grimly as he walked along beside him.
"Really?"
"Oh yes," said Marvin, "I mean I've asked for them to be
replaced but no one ever listens."
"I can imagine.”

Dave why are you pinching me Dave?
“To practice punishment and torture techniques that can be used on conservatives so that it won’t show of course.”
They already have that...called cattle prods. They are standard issue for liberals in congress.

Almost like the PAIN whenever I see a screaming, capitalized word in the trash tabloid rag known as The Mail?
Stupid writer gets all twitterpated over adding sensors...
WHY?
To make a robot feel REAl pain, stick his finger into an electrical socket.
Pain is a learning tool. If it gets “hurt” doing something it knows not to do that again. Think of that time as a kid you touched the electrical socket. We pretty much all did it once. And only once. Why? Cause it hurt.
Thank you. I thought the same as some other posters.. what would be a good purpose for this. You nailed it. :)
There is no consciousness for a robot to feel anything. It’s just parts moving and if this part moves over here we will define that as pain. To get a sense of a robot’s lack of consciousness think about turning on a computer. When you turn on a computer it says “Welcome.” Do you think it means it?
I’m still gonna need a 40 plasma rifle with extra batteries.

Obviously they will not feel PAIN. They will simulate the sensation of PAIN.
Robots are not organisms. They are machines. They are not living. Eh? capeesh?
