Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
Associated Press ^ | January 23, 2023 | Haleluya Hadero

Across the country, there’s a silent frustration brewing about an age-old practice that many say is getting out of hand: tipping.

Some fed-up consumers are posting rants on social media complaining about tip requests at drive-thrus, while others say they’re tired of being asked to leave a gratuity for a muffin or a simple cup of coffee at their neighborhood bakery. What’s next, they wonder — are we going to be tipping our doctors and dentists, too?

As more businesses adopt digital payment methods, customers are automatically being prompted to leave a gratuity — many times as high as 30% — at places they normally wouldn’t. And some say it has become more frustrating as the price of items has skyrocketed due to inflation, which eased to 6.5% in December but still remains painfully high.

Traditionally, consumers have taken pride in being good tippers at places like restaurants, which typically pay their workers lower than the minimum wage in expectation they’ll make up the difference in tips. But academics who study the topic say many consumers are now feeling irritated by automatic tip requests at coffee shops and other counter service eateries where tipping has not typically been expected, workers make at least the minimum wage and service is usually limited. …

At the self-service gas pumps I guess they will want us to run in the store to tip the cashier.

Yes. I’m not tipping someone who stands across a counter and hands me a bag.

Restaurant meals have also gotten quite expensive, however, my wages have not increased at nearly the level of inflation.

People who work for tips seems to expect 20-25% now rather than the more traditional 18%.

I believe the percentage should go down. I tip about 15% now unless the service is exemplary.

I will only tip at restraunts that provide actual waiter service. If they refill my drink, I will tip.

I’m sick of it. I tipped well during COVID.

That would seem a perfectly acceptable occasion to leave a tip. Except, apparently, for the tightwads at the Associated Press.

Media people are notoriously bad tippers.

Say at a coffee shop, they get the change (not bills) from a cash purchase. If I’m a regular, an Xmas tip or something like that.

Tipping is a gateway drug to bribing.

I worked with enough media people and that is a true statement.

You must be younger than I am. The “traditional” tip I grew up with was 10%.

It’s ridiculous to tip someone for handing you a muffin or cup of coffee.

That is nowhere near the level of service one gets from dining at an eat in restaurant where the waiter or waitress brings your drinks, takes your order, and generally makes sure you have no needs during your meal and he or she is doing the running around.

I worked at a McDonalds in the past and filling a cup of coffee or putting a piece of food and handing it to the customer is doing your job. That’s what you are getting paid for. There is no above and beyond the call in those actions.

Hubby works part time at an expensive steak house at an Indian casino. They pay servers less than $8 an hour because they’re a sovereign nation and federal and state laws apparently don’t apply to them. Without tips, we’d be homeless. So it really galls me that baristas earning $15-18 an hour also expect a tip, and that’s before they even make your frappacino, FFS!

When restaurant food almost doubled over the last few years, 15% on that inflated price also almost doubled. The minimum wage from they got from the employer also went up...

I’ll tip 15% max for good service. Nothing on takeout.

With many new minimum wage laws, tips should be shrinking.

Yes, tipping has gotten to the stupid level in this country. It’s only the U.S. also, I travel the world with my job and nowhere else does everyone have their hand out expecting a tip for doing their job.

I do most all of my purchases with plastic, but I try to carry around a bunch of dollar bills for tipping for small purchases at bars and coffee shops. A lot of people are having a hard time these days, might as well help them out.

Meanwhile, Associated Press employees probably steal the silverware in addition to stiffing the person waiting on them.

It was when I was younger. Seems to have been 18 for many years.

They can easily program the pump ...

Oh, I'll give 'em a dollar for their time. Some folks really are having a terribly hard time these days. I'm sure they appreciate any courtesy.

Besides, I'm not an Associated Press employee. :)

I’ve changed, started tipping more, the Good Lord has taken care of me, so I share.

However, I go to redneck places, don’t remember last time I was at a high end restaurant. I prefer grilling my own steaks, cooking a big lobster, and making my kind of food.

My daughter likes Subway, so order 2 12” subs, use the app and get BOGO 50% off, tip a buck per sub, everyone is happy.

Tipped the cook $5 the other day (again) at the Redneck bar crawling distance from my house, I get immediate service when I walk in. I cooked my way through college so I appreciate good cooks.

However, yea it’s getting out of hand where every mobile order wants 20%+.
