Mine is a Sony Bravia. When it turns on, it's got programmed advertisements for the "cause-du-jour" at the top of the screen.
Currently, since this is black month, there's a picture of a domestic terrorist named angela davis in the 60s, running her mouth. And it's A. Big. Mouth.
I want a smart tv that doesn't have all that nonsense and propaganda on the opening screen. It's bad enough that Amazon Prime constantly pimps those liberal causes (black month; homo pride; etc), but I'd like to not have it on the opening screen.
Not only do you not want a smart TV—old or new—but you’re better off with no TV altogether.
Who wants their “programming”?
It’s been several years since we’ve looked for a HDTV. But I have to say, I don’t recall seeing any TV that had advertisements on its startup screen.
Just get a non smart tv and an android box to hook up to it
Are you sure this is the Sony startup screen doing this, or one of the apps like Netflix or Hulu?
There's a way to lose all of this. Go to YouTube and search your TV brand, then how to lose start-up advertisements.
32 inch Roku tv at Walmart. $108
Great tv!!
As long as it’s connected to the internet, this is going to be a problem.
If you use your tv for only movies or video games, you can disconnect the tv from the internet.
You may to settle for saving everything onto a stick and using a stick to watch your shows.
It is going to get worse.
My LG works great and NO advertisements.
We have three Samsung smart TVs, all about seven years old. We get no ads at startup, but maybe that’s because of their age. I don’t know. We really like them.
I got a 65” TLC brand Roku TV last summer that I like a lot. Best Buy price was around $450.00. Goes straight to the main menu when powered on.
What he said. When I got divorced in 1977 I left her ALL the television sets. Forty-five years with no TV in the house has made me a much better man.
So what you want is a smart, internet-connected device that can spam you, view what you’re doing with its internal camera, then.
Smart TVs are very cheap now and are a big temptation, but they aren’t worth the actual ‘cost’ to me.
We have an LG and love it. Best picture we have ever had and the smartness is passive. I have a ROKU, Firestick and surround sound system with a Blu-ray. Don’t need to go to the movies, but the best thing is old classic movies are terrific on it.
We have a LG 4K-OLED. Great picture quality. We stream YoutubeTV. There are no start up ads on it. I’m like the one commentor, I’ve never had a TV that had ads on start up or if we did.... hubby took that all off at set up.
I just bought a big LG. Over 2 grand..! But, It hasn’t made me mad yet...
Trying to teach the wife to use it has been a.....burden.
We certainly don’t want a “smart TV” spying on us, so sticking to our old one. And 4 years ago we ditched Direct TV hook up because there was nothing worth watching on anymore, and now we just use ROKU to stream whatever we watch. So I don’t know a lot about Smart TVs.
However dealing with hooking up my Mom’s TV for her, I see that her service provider’s screen comes on first when TV is turned on. This is a local provider called Comporium. So I am thinking that those annoying ads you are seeing are not due to the brand of TV you have, but due to your service provider.
I’m reading this thread only for the smug virtue signaling.
My near future when we cut the cord and go with a streaming service. I really need a sign on my computer desk that says "Tech Customer Support".
